Director Matteo Garrone’s Pinocchio trailer shows an eye-catching and grounded version of the story about the wooden puppet. The Adventures of Pinocchio is a famous 1883 novel written by Italian author Carlo Collodi, telling the story of the wooden puppet Pinocchio and his creator/father Geppetto. Disney’s animated version of Pinocchio (1940) is an all-time classic, and they will look to recreate that magic with Robert Zemeckis’ upcoming live-action take starring Tom Hanks. Also, there's Guillermo del Toro's animated musical version of Pinocchio going to Netflix. However, before any of those see the light of day, Garrone, an Italian filmmaker, will see his version of Collodi’s classic tale hit theatres this Christmas season.
Roadside Attractions released the trailer and poster for Garrone’s Pinocchio, which also stars academy award winner Roberto Benigni as Mister Geppetto and newcomer Federico lelapi as Pinocchio. The trailer does a wonderful job capturing the spirit that everyone associates with the Pinocchio story, especially when Pinocchio says, “I want to become a boy like all the others.” In addition to that, there is a darker element to Garrone’s version, as the trailer as a whole has a dark ambiance and visual. But that’s also merged with some incredible visuals like Pinocchio’s nose being pecked by woodpeckers, which is a visual straight from Collodi’s novel.
Although the much-talked-about Zemeckis and del Toro versions have little to show at this point, it still seems clear that Garrone has managed to create his own unique version. Judging by the trailer, it seems to follow the original source material more than Disney’s animated version, both in terms of storyline and also visually, as Pinocchio’s look is not patterned after the famous Disney version. It’s also set in Italy and created by Italian artists, which brings the story back to its roots. Garrone’s film has received positive reviews as it has already been released in other countries, and if people don’t want to wait for Disney or Netflix’s films, Garrone’s eye-catching and grounded-looking Pinocchio will hit theatres on December 25.
Synopsis:
"Shot in stunning Italian locations, Matteo Garrone’s rich world of mystery and wonder stars Academy Award winning actor Roberto Benigni as Geppetto, the old woodcarver whose puppet creation, Pinocchio, magically comes to life with dreams of becoming a real boy. Easily led astray, Pinocchio (nine-year-old Federico Ielapi) tumbles from one misadventure to another as he is tricked, kidnapped and chased by bandits through a wonderful world full of imaginative creatures – from the belly of a giant fish, to the Land Of Toys and the Field Of Miracles."
