Lucasfilm has announced the development of a Mandalorian spin-off titled Rangers of the New Republic, to premiere on Disney+ in the future. Last year, Jon Favreau brought The Mandalorian to Disney+, the first ever live-action Star Wars series. It focuses on the titular Mandalorian Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) as he travels the galaxy protecting a powerful young Child (playfully dubbed Baby Yoda by the internet). Almost immediately, The Mandalorian became a hit for Disney+, winning over audiences with its simple story and fascinating dives into the Star Wars universe.
The Mandalorian season 2 has been underway for several weeks now, and the inclusion of characters like Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) and Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) has led fans to believe there could be several spin-off projects on the way. Now that Disney has confirmed there will be 10 Star Wars shows heading to Disney+ over the next few years, Lucasfilm has begun pulling back the curtain on these upcoming projects during Disney's Investor Day.
Among the exciting reveals was the news that Favreau and Dave Filoni are working on Rangers of the New Republic, a Mandalorian spin-off set within the same time period. It will crossover with the other announced spin-off, Ahsoka. The official logo can be seen down below.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy didn't reveal more information about Rangers of the New Republic, but fans will no doubt be happy to speculate about what the series could focus on. It isn't clear as to which characters will become the center of Rangers of the New Republic, but it could perhaps be Cara Dune (Gina Carano), as she recently took up a job with the New Republic in The Mandalorian season 2. As Rangers of the New Republic will take place at the same time as The Mandalorian, there's a good chance there will be some familiar faces popping up. It's already confirmed the show will crossover with Ahsoka, meaning Disney+'s Star Wars universe is looking to be as interconnected as the MCU.
As of right now, no tentative premiere date or production start was given for Rangers of the New Republic. As Lucasfilm is hard at work on Andor and the Obi-Wan series, it seems likely that this new spin-off (along with Ahsoka) won't kick off for a little while. At this point, it looks like fans won't see Rangers of the New Republic until 2022 at the earliest. Of course, this could change, as everything is speculation right now. Nevertheless, this is a thrilling bit of news for Star Wars fans.
