Spider-Man 3 Now Has The Perfect Set-Up For Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin

With Spider-Man 3 dipping into the multiverse and rumors circulating of Charlie Cox’s return as Daredevil, the movie seems primed for the potential return of Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin. Tom Holland’s upcoming return as Peter Parker is shaping up to have an ensemble cast pulled from past Spider-Man films, according to recent reports. Combined with Doctor Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) planned appearance, that opens up a ton of possibilities that could even have ramifications on the future of the MCU.

The notions of a Spider-Verse storyline in Spider-Man 3 began to emerge when it was reported that Jamie Foxx would be playing villain Electro in the film – the same character he played in Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Then more recently, additional reports claimed that Afred Molina’s Doctor Octopus and Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker will also appear alongside Holland and crew. Now, another rumor is circulating that Charlie Cox’s Daredevil could show up in the movie – a character whose rights recently reverted to Disney.

Though the Daredevil rumors are a bit more questionable than the prior accounts have been, they do open the door for yet another cameo: Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin. D’Onofrio’s performance as the terrifying mobster was one of the most praised elements of Daredevil during its lauded run on Netflix, and the actor has since expressed interested in returning to the role in the MCU. With the help of some multiverse timeline jumping - or even just a proper acknowledgment of Daredevil in the MCU canon – that could easily happen in Spider-Man 3, since Kingpin is not only a Daredevil villain but a Spider-Man one as well.

Charlie Cox’s return as Daredevil is perhaps the most obvious path to a similar comeback from D’Onofrio, but it isn’t the only reason the move would make sense. The Kingpin has always been one of Spider-Man’s primary antagonists in the comics, frequently orchestrating the dark deeds of other villains around him. His role in the fictionalized New York crime scape is central, and D’Onofrio’s particular portrayal of the character has garnered widespread acclaim. With a bit less grotesque violence, he could be a perfect addition to Holland’s Spider-Verse, with or without Matt Murdoch. Furthermore, Spider-Man 3 can adapt part of the Civil War comics story, in which Kingpin put a hit out on Spider-Man after Peter revealed his secret identity to the world. With some tweaks, that story can work perfectly in the upcoming sequel.

Since the Netflix Marvel series were ostensibly canonical with the films of the MCU, Spider-Man 3 might not even have to use the multiverse to bring D’Onofrio’s Kingpin into the fold. They could, of course, but they’d have options of how to do it, and could choose that way that makes the most narrative sense. Then there’s the counterargument that too many villains will oversaturate Spider-Man 3, causing it to fall short as past Spider-Man iterations have for similar reasons. And, of course, many of these reports have yet to be officially confirmed. However it turns out, Spider-Man 3 should be a fascinating film to look forward to.
