The Expanse Finally Explains Why James Holden Is Special

The Expanse season 5 finally explains why James Holden is so important to the plot and the events happening in the show. After the attack on the Canterbury, Holden has been placed in positions of leadership, but the discovery of the Protomolecule catapulted him into a vital role - especially after he began to experience visions of Miller, who guides him in the Ring station. Before this season, it wasn’t clear why Holden could communicate with the Protomolecule when no one else could.

While the book series The Expanse has multiple point-of-view characters that change across the eight novels released so far, James Holden’s presence has been constant. He’s arguably the main protagonist and thus the central figure of the plot. It’s no wonder, then, that he would be the one the Protomolecule would seek. This is also true for the TV series, but now the first episode of season 5 has given an explanation as to why Holden can talk to and interact with the Protomolecule and the Ilus ruins.

When trying to convince Fred Johnson of the dangers of not destroying the Protomolecule, Holden explains he believes his interactions with the Protomolecule-created Miller have altered his brain and now he can see strange beings, which he believes are the ones who exterminated the creators of the Ring. After what happened with Julie Gao and the creation of human-protomolecule hybrids, the idea that the Protomolecule can change human physiology is nothing new. What’s interesting is Holden has remained himself, probably because by the time the “ghost” of Miller started to communicate with him, its goals were not to infect and spread like in Eros, but to guide Holden.

Although vision-Miller has apparently been destroyed at the end of The Expanse season 4, ending Holden’s link to it, Holden explains why he has still the ability to sense things others can’t by comparing the ability to folding paper, which retains “creases” even after you smooth it out. Fred Johnson, however, isn’t convinced and calls it “brain damage.” Considering everything that has happened in the show, Holden’s explanation is likely to be true or, at least, some form of the truth. There’s still a lot to learn about the Protomolecule and the alien civilizations that battled each other thousands of years ago.

Because Holden positioned himself as neutral in the Earth, Mars, and Belt conflict, and because he has firsthand experience with the Protomolecule, he became a kind of specialist on the subject. But when you get yourself close to alien beings, eventually that exposure will have consequences. And it just so happens that he’s the captain of the Rocinante, a ship that is always right in the thick of things.
