With tonight's finale, The Masked Singer season four draws to a close. But fans will be excited to know that season five has been confirmed! Beyond that, we've compiled everything else we know about the upcoming season.
This year spelled change in the world of The Masked Singer. Last year at this time, fans had barely over a one-month break between seasons. When season two ended in mid-December 2019, season three already had a start date a mere six weeks later, on February 2, 2020. This year, season four was delayed due to COVID and, while it is wrapping up at roughly the same time as season two last year, there is still no set date for the premiere of season five. The only announcements made have claimed the show will have a season five, and it will premiere sometime in 2021.
With no immediate date for season five, it appears the show's spin-off, The Masked Dancer with host Craig Robinson, is slated to fill that void for the time being. The good news is the wait for that is only a few weeks, as The Masked Dancer is set to premiere at the end of this month. Based on COVID restrictions, it is likely season five will be filmed similarly to the current one. This means another at-home audience. If the filming schedule of the current season is any indication, there will be a short window between filming and the premiere. But as of now, there is no evidence the show is ready to film soon.
Another early indicator new season is coming is leaked costumes. A month before the premiere of season three, for example, 6 of the 18 costumes had been revealed and at least one guest judge had been announced. For season five, we have no info yet on costumes or guest judges. For season three, the premiere date was revealed a full two months before its February 2 start. Even with the uncertainty of season four due to the pandemic, the premiere date was revealed a month before, and the fact that it was coming in fall was revealed much sooner. While all of this suggests an early 2021 premiere is unlikely, it cannot be ruled out. All previous seasons of The Masked Singer have aired in January-February, or in September. Perhaps, with The Masked Dancer as a placeholder, they can push that timing back a bit. If the show does well it will buy them some time. If not, there could be a scramble to get season five up and running as quickly as possible.
If season five does premiere in early 2021, we should expect other information to be revealed soon. As of now, it seems likely the host and judges will remain the same as they have in previous seasons, and there is no indication the Wednesday night time slot will change. Check back for updates on the release date of The Masked Singer season five, and in the meantime be sure to check out The Masked Dancer for its debut on December 27 before it slides into the normal Wednesday time slot of The Masked Singer.
The Masked Singer airs Wednesdays at 8 pm ET on Fox.
