Titans commemorated the last day of filming for the year with a new set photo of Jason Todd (Curran Walters). The series first premiered in 2018 as the much-anticipated live-action Teen Titans adaptation for DC Universe. The show, which features Dick Grayson/Nightwing (Brenton Thwaites), Kory Anders/Starfire (Anna Diop), Donna Troy/Wonder Girl (Conor Leslie), Rachel Roth/Raven (Teagan Croft), Gar Logan/Beast Boy (Ryan Potter) and more, was a success despite some struggle to find its footing. After airing season 2, Warner Bros. moved the series to HBO Max.
While the coronavirus pandemic initially set back Titans production, season 3 finally began filming in October 2020. Since then, the actors and crew have given some behind the scenes looks at the set, including new costumes for Starfire and Jason Todd, who will shed his identity as Robin and take up the mantle of the Red Hood in the future episodes.
On Monday, Titans cinematographer Boris Mojsovski marked the end of filming for the show in 2020 with a sneak peek of Walters in character as Jason on Instagram. The scene seems to depict Jason in civilian gear inside a nondescript home (there appears to be a fireplace in the background). Walters’s face is partially covered by a Christmas-themed clapperboard, which Mojosovski called “the Festivus slate.”
Not many details have been announced on upcoming storylines, but what has been released points to a significant role for Jason Todd in season 3. After leaving the team at the end of season 2, Jason will become obsessed with taking down his former allies. How exactly Jason will transition into this villainous alter ego remains to be seen, as Red Hood’s comic book origin (being murdered by Joker and then brought back to life) won’t exist in this particular corner of the multiverse.
That being said, season 3 will see the show become quite literally more Gotham-centric, as the titular team moves from San Francisco to Batman’s hometown. Other familiar Gothamites are slated to appear, including Barbara Gordon (who will be the city’s police commissioner) and Jonathan Crane (a.k.a. Scarecrow). While the series runs the risk of becoming a bit too Batfamily-heavy, the change of scenery could allow the series to explore more of Jason’s early life and his tenure as Robin, informing his taking up the Red Hood mantle.
Since Titans doesn’t yet have a release date for season 3, it may be a while before Red Hood hits the small screen. The series will resume filming in 2021, so any more tantalizing social media hints will probably have to wait for the new year, as well. Fans will have to content themselves with speculating and theorizing until then.
