An upcoming Minecraft resource pack turns the legendary block-building game into id Software's brutal FPS Doom. Both titles are iconic pieces of video game history for wildly different reasons; the Doom franchise is one of the most beloved FPS series on the market, and the original game is often credited with defining the genre at its earliest point. The most recent entry, Doom Eternal, came out this year to rave reviews and adoration from fans, and even got a Game of the Year nomination.
Minecraft, meanwhile, is the single best-selling game of all time. Many fans agree that Mojang's title sets the standard for sandbox crafting games, and even after eleven years of operation, Minecraft is thriving by just about any definition. It's had a modestly successful spinoff in the form of Minecraft Dungeons, an isometric dungeon crawler which took fans quite by surprise when it was revealed. Minecraft is also receiving regular content updates and managing a sustained explosion of popularity on YouTube, where it accumulated 200 billion views this year alone.
It also has a thriving modding community, which is responsible for this remarkably violent new mod courtesy of user Sibogy (via PCGamesN). DOOMED: Demons of the Nether brings the blood-stained, demon-infested environs of the 2016 Doom game into Mojang's tranquil masterpiece. Shooter fans will recognize all the sound effects from Doom, as well as VEGA's calm robotic voice guiding Doomguy's blocky new form through the halls. The new footage revealed by Sibogy shows the player facing off against a notorious Pinky demon, which appears to be a sort of reskinned cow. The player has familiar Doom weapons at their disposal, including a UAC pistol, a shotgun, and a chainsaw they can use to spawn ammo from zombies. There are also familiar portals and bounce pads to help Doomguy maneuver about the space and attack the Pinky's vulnerable back.
The cartoonishly gory nature of the Doom franchise lends itself very well to amusing crossovers like this; almost any video game provides a hilarious juxtaposition when compared to the bloody antics of Doomguy. When the game released, fans had a lot of fun comparing it to Nintendo's tranquil life simulator Animal Crossing: New Horizons, since the games released on the same day and couldn't be more different. This comparison led to someone modding beloved dog villager Isabelle into Doom 2.
Fans also enjoy Doom for the meme it's spawned, which contends that everything can run Doom, from toasters to pregnancy tests. Another recent Minecraft mod let fans build a functional PC in the game, and that PC can run Doom too. When Sibogy's new Doomed mod finally gets released, players who aren't content to play Doom in Minecraft will instead have the chance to play Minecraft as Doom.
