Who Plays The Imperial Pilots In The Mandalorian Season 2 Finale

The Mandalorian season 2 finale opens with the Slave 1 chasing after an Imperial shuttle carrying Dr. Pershing, and here's who plays the two pilots. Neither of the Imperial pilots survive a subsequent confrontation with Din Djarin and Cara Dune, but they do indeed make their presence known in the Disney+ series. The characters are portrayed by Thomas E. Sullivan and Luke Baines, whom may seem familiar to audiences because of their recent TV and movie roles.

In "Chapter 16: The Rescue", Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) needs to find the missing Baby Yoda, so he targets Dr. Pershing (Omid Abtahi) with the assistance of Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) and Cara Dune (Gina Carano). They successfully board the Imperial lambda shuttle, and while one of the pilots wants to surrender, the other one remains loyal to the Empire to the very end. He even takes the opportunity to canonize the fan theory that the Rebels were terrorists, since millions of people died aboard the two Death Stars.

After one of the Imperial pilots kills the other one, he then trolls Dune about Alderaan - her homeworld that was destroyed by the first Death Star in A New Hope. To Dune's credit, however, she does offer the pilot a chance to drop his blaster before ultimately killing him. While Sullivan isn't afforded too much screen time as the compromising Imperial character, Baines does receive a moment to shine in The Mandalorian season 2 finale as the stubborn pilot with a big mouth.

Sullivan (above left) has landed some notable roles in TV and movies during the past five years. In 2017, he portrayed Keith Trasker in Chicago P.D. season 4 and Logan Porter in Bull season 2. Then, Sullivan worked with the iconic Martin Scorsese for The Irishman and appeared as Warren Swanson, a Washington D.C. dishwasher who shot at Jimmy Hoffa inside a courtroom with a pellet gun. Most recently, Sullivan portrayed HYDRA affiliate Nathaniel Malick for several episodes in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 7.

As for Baines (above right), he's best known for movie roles in Saving Mr. Banks and The Girl in the Photographs. He also portrayed Jesus in Under the Silver Lake and Jonathan Morgenstern in Shadowhunters. For Sullivan and Baines, their performances in The Mandolarian season 2 finale create a unique energy to kick off the episode. And while the former receives more screen time, the latter helps establish the tone for the sequence. For Sullivan, it's an especially big opportunity to display his acting chops alongside Pascal and Carano (and to a large Disney+ audience).
