Patty Jenkins, director of Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984, already has plans for Wonder Woman 4. The director's return to the DCEU was up in the air after Warner Bros. pivot to streaming for their 2021 slate. After Wonder Woman 1984's successful weekend, though, Warner Bros. is fast-tracking Wonder Woman 3, with both Jenkins and star Gal Gadot involved.
Wonder Woman 1984 was watched by more than half of HBO Max's current subscribers the day it was released. On top of that, the film had the most successful pandemic box office weekend, grossing $16.7 million. Jenkins will still work on her upcoming Star Wars film, Rogue Squadron, before Wonder Woman 3. That hasn't stopped the director from planning ahead, though.
Jenkins told EW a few short days before her return was announced that she had two more stories planned for the films. Jenkins says that these two stories will bring about the completion of the series. In her comments, Jenkins emphasized the main themes of her Wonder Woman films and the way they encompass a more loving and kind vision for the superheroes involved.
The story continues after this in movies that I may or may not direct. I have two more stories that become the completion of this story and it's all about women stepping in as women, in the most loving kind pure and natural way. And making a difference in the world without having to change who they are to do it.
Diana Prince was all but guaranteed to be a presence in the future of the DCEU. 2017's Wonder Woman was one of the highest-grossing DCEU films yet and its most well-received. While Wonder Woman 1984's critical score may have faltered, it looks to be making a huge impact both on streaming and in theaters, hence the studio fast-tracking the third film. What that third film may look like, though, is up in the air.
Both Wonder Woman films have taken place in the past - Wonder Woman during WWI and Wonder Woman 1984 during the 80s - making a modern-day solo film all but necessary to complete Diana Prince's story. Gadot seems to agree, expressing her desire for a third film to be set in the present. What this means for the trajectory of the franchise is unclear, but it could allow for Diana Prince's story to be more directly tied into that of the current DCEU timeline. That means Wonder Woman 4 could potentially see other DC heroes fighting alongside Diana, bringing her story full circle.
