Resident Evil Village 'Open-World' Design Hinted At On Steam

A tag on Resident Evil Village's Steam Database page suggests the latest entry in the horror franchise has, in some way, adopted open-world design elements. Capcom built up interest in the title's gameplay experience last week during Resident Evil Showcase, upon revealing a brand-new trailer and the first look at gameplay footage.

The publisher managed to pack several Resident Evil-related announcements into the brief stream. Thus, in addition to the aforementioned trailer and gameplay reveals, Capcom unveiled RE Village's May 2021 release date and confirmed that versions for both last-gen and current-gen consoles are in the works. Viewers were also treated to a glimpse at Re:Verse, a multiplayer mode that those who purchase RE Village will be able to access at no additional cost. The showcase let loose details about the game's multiple special editions and demos, as well. Right now, PS5 owners can download the Maiden demo for free; meanwhile, another RE Village demo will go live this spring for all platforms.

Eagle-eyed fans noticed that Resident Evil Village's SteamDB page recently received a new store tag marked as "Open World." This inspired one fan to reach out to reputable leaker Dusk Golem on Twitter, who claimed the title boasts somewhat of a "small open-world design." Apparently, the development team internally describes it as a Metroidvania, whereby, unlike past RE installments, there's more of an emphasis on connected areas that players can backtrack to throughout the game.

Capcom itself has yet to detail whether or not the open-world design elements do in fact play a part in the latest Resident Evil. As such, fans would do well to take all of the above with a grain of salt for the time being. However, should this information prove accurate, it wouldn't be the first time leaked details undercut Capcom's marketing. Gameplay footage related to one of RE Village's boss battles recently leaked on YouTube, for example.

Due to a ransomware attack on its networks late last year, the publisher has been the subject of several other leaks, too. Not long ago, the overarching plot and character arcs for RE Village made the rounds online. Capcom's release plans for the next several years were also prematurely outed. It remains to be seen if the company intends to alter said plans going forward.
