Why Avengers: Endgame's Trailer Used "Fake" Infinity War Thor Footage

Here's why Avengers: Endgame trailer uses fake Avengers: Infinity War footage. Marvel Studios is notoriously known for keeping the spoilers at bay, but they leveled up their security for the franchise's culminating movies so as not to inadvertently reveal major narrative details. Given this, they had to be crafty with their marketing for the films, particularly with Endgame.

Marvel Studios released the second official trailer for Endgame in March 2019 — a month and a half before the movie hit theaters. Clocking in at two minutes and 26 seconds, it featured a montage of scenes from older MCU films in black and white mixed in with Endgame footage in color. Interestingly, however, a shot of Thor in color at the 1:35 mark wasn't from Avengers 4, instead, it was an alternate shot of his arrival in the nation of Wakanda in Infinity War. It's worth noting that this particular shot wasn't used in the 2018 film, but between the background and the God of Thunder's appearance, this was more likely a different take of the same scene.

So, why would Endgame use this particular scene considering that it's not from the movie? It all boiled down to Thor's actual arc in the Infinity Saga-capper. While Endgame picked up directly after the events of Infinity War, the five-year time-jump in the middle of the movie allowed the characters' appearance to drastically change, none more so than the God of Thunder. Aside from gaining weight following his catastrophic failure to stop Thanos, he also grew out his hair. And since marketing didn't want to spoil the reveal of Fat Thor, they opted to use a scene that's technically hasn't been used before, but would look very familiar to fans who paid extra close attention to Infinity War.

What's curious here is that Marvel Studios didn't really need to go this route. While using footage that ultimately won't be in the final cut of the movie in marketing has become the norm in high-profile blockbusters, Kevin Feige and his team could've featured Thor in the said Endgame trailer without using fake Infinity War footage. They could've simply shown him during the early parts of the movie before he gained the weight and grew his hair back. Additionally, Hulk was also in the same situation since he drastically changed his appearance to be Smart Hulk after Endgame's time jump. If anything, it was trickier when it came to the character considering that showing him as anything other than Bruce Banner would be a spoiler given what transpired in Infinity War.

Thor's appearance, particularly his haircut, is a time indicator in the MCU. Depending on what he looks like, one can immediately tell when something takes place in the franchise, hence why the fake Avengers: Infinity War footage stuck out in the Avengers: Endgame trailer. While the Infinity Saga ended with him still with the extra weight and the unruly hair, that might all change the next time he returns to the MCU through Taika Waititi's Thor: Love & Thunder.
