Anthony Mackie Responds To Captain America 4 Reports

Anthony Mackie responded to reports of a Captain America 4. Since Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) passed the vibranium shield onto Falcon (Mackie) in Avengers: Endgame, which marked the end of the MCU’s Phase 3, fans expected Sam Wilson to assume the mantle of Captain America in the future of the MCU. But after the Disney+ series Falcon and the Winter Soldier, was announced in April of 2019, it was clear this journey would unfold on the small screen.

The first episode saw Sam give up the shield to be displayed in the Smithsonian museum, but eventually regain control of it in episode 5. On his path to becoming the next Captain America, Sam faced resistance from the U.S. government installing John Walker (Wyatt Russell) as the next Cap and Karl Morgenthau’s (Erin Kellyman) anti-nationalist Flag-Smashers. Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly), a Black super-soldier who was imprisoned and experimented on for decades by the U.S. government, also caused Sam to question whether he wanted to assume the mantle of Captain America.

Shortly after the finale aired, THR reported that Marvel Studios is developing Captain America 4 with Falcon and the Winter Soldier showrunner, Malcolm Spellman, writing the script. While all signs point to Mackie starring as Captain America in the film, he has not yet heard anything from the studio about the project. In an interview with EW on Tuesday, Mackie reacted to the news that Marvel is developing a fourth Captain America movie:

I literally found out yesterday in a grocery store. The checkout guy named Dwayne, a cool cat, he's like, 'Yo, man. Is this real?!" [holds up a cellphone] "I'm like, 'I haven't heard anything.' That's what I love about working for Marvel. They call you, they're like, 'Come to L.A. We wanna tell you what's going on.' So, I'm excited to see what happens, but I haven't heard anything.

The sixth and final episode of Falcon and the Winter Soldier finally saw Sam don his Captain America costume equipped with vibranium wings courtesy of Wakanda. Later on in the interview, Mackie joked "What would be really bad is if the movie [Captain America 4] starts and I get blown out of the sky." While a second season of Falcon And the Winter Soldier is also a possibility, Mackie says has not heard anything about that either: "It's always great to go to work with Sebastian [Stan]. And Kari [Skogland], our director, was amazing. It would be fun as hell to do," Mackie said about a possible season 2.

While a lot is still uncertain regarding Mackie’s future in the MCU, all signs point to the actor being the face of the blockbuster franchise that is Captain America. Since Marvel is always secretive about their upcoming projects, it is likely that Captain America 4 is still so early on in development that the studio has not yet informed its stars of anything.
