The Falcon and the Winter Soldier crew applauded when they first saw Sam's new Captain America suit on set. After six action-filled episodes, Disney+'s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier officially concluded last week. The series first premiered in mid-March and followed the adventures of Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan). The show was set around six months after the events of Avengers: Endgame, when Sam was first handed over Captain America's shield. The series also introduced new faces, including Wyatt Russell's John Walker, who is appointed by the government to be the new Captain America after Sam refused it.
The series centered around Sam's inner struggles as he wrestled with the idea of donning the shield and being the new face of Captain America as a Black man. After John failed to hold the mantle in a respectful and responsible way like Steve Rogers, becoming a cold-blooded murderer, he was stripped of the title. This ultimately left Sam to step up and become the new Captain America - and of course that meant a new suit, thanks to Wakanda. In the finale episode, Sam revealed himself to the world as the new Captain America, donning a brand new suit that fans were pleased to see stayed true to the design from the comics. While Sam's Captain America suit features the same color palette of red, white and blue, though predominately more white than blue, it also still has elements of his Falcon suit, including the wings. As fans cheered when they saw Sam in his new suit, it was apparently just as exciting for the cast and crew.
Speaking with Fandom, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier director, Kari Skogland, recalled a powerful moment on set when Mackie turned up in his new Captain America suit for the first time. Skogland said the cast and crew applauded when they saw Mackie in the new suit. "When Anthony walked on set actually wearing it and actually carrying the shield and just doing it like it was very, very natural, as I recollect, we all broke out into applause. It was just a wonderful moment for everybody on set.” said Skogland.
The end of the penultimate episode teased Sam receiving his new suit from Wakanda, showing him opening a box that Bucky gave him. While viewers speculated it was his new Captain America suit, it was still a huge moment in the finale episode when Sam flew in with his new armor.
While Sam certainly had some big shoes to fill, the finale showed Sam appearing comfortable and natural in his new armor. What also made the new suit so special was that it was the perfect blend of Captain America and Falcon, so Sam still retains his original identity. It's unsurprising that the cast and crew were just as moved seeing Mackie in the new suit as fans were.
