Community Days are some of the most highly anticipated events in Pokémon GO, and this weekend, trainers will be able to enjoy another. May's Pokémon GO Swablu Community Day highlights the Normal/Flying-type Pokémon from the Hoenn region. While trainers may be excited about catching a Shiny Swablu or obtaining enough candy to evolve it into an Altaria, it's the latter's new Mega Evolution being introduced that players should take notice of.
Mega Altaria will added to Pokémon GO during this weekend's Community Day, giving trainers another Mega option to take into battle. Although there are already 12 Megas in Pokémon GO, none can excel in battle the way Mega Altaria will be able to.
Mega Altaria's typing is one of the most unique in the franchise. Upon Mega Evolving, Altaria, which is a Dragon/Flying-type, transforms into a Dragon/Fairy-type - the first and only in all of Pokémon. This combination makes it super effective against some of the most powerful types in Pokémon GO, including Dragon and Fighting, as well as resistant to Electric, Fire, Water, Grass, Fighting, Dark and Bug.
As long as trainers stay away from Steel, Ice and Poison-type attacks, Mega Altaria will be a major force in Pokémon GO Raids. This is especially true when trainers take into account how Mega Evolution works in Pokémon GO: Since Mega Evolving increases the power of attacks that match the type of the Mega, Mega Altaria will be able to power up every Dragon and Fairy-type attack for all trainer involved in a given Raid battle.
Looking to the near future, Mega Altaria will be a great option against Yveltal, a Dark/Flying-type Legendary Pokémon from Kalos that will begin appearing in Raids starting May 18. Trainers looking to add one to their collections should be able to defeat and catch it more easily with a Mega Altaria on their side. Mega Altaria would also benefit teams going up against Mega Gyarados and returning Legendaries like Rayquaza, Latios, Latias, Zekrom, Giratina, Darkrai and more. Other Pokémon GO Legendaries that have yet to arrive, like Zygarde, will also be weak to Mega Altaria.
Couple its strong type combination with its Community Day-exclusive Moonblast move (learned when it evolves during the event window), and Mega Altaria could provide Pokémon GO trainers with one of the most powerful Fairy-type options in the game.
