Guardians of the Galaxy director, James Gunn, has stated that the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be his last film in the franchise. Vol. 3, which would be the tenth film in Phase Four of the MCU, just got a new release date of May 5, 2023. The film will star all of the usual suspects, including Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, and Bradley Cooper.
The Guardians of the Galaxy franchise began with Vol. 1 in 2014. Guardians marked a lot of firsts for the MCU—it was the first ensemble hero franchise of the MCU outside of the assembled Avengers films, and it noticeably ditched the “tights and capes” aesthetic of superhero films to allow for relatable humans, talking animals, aliens, and more. Additionally, it set the MCU precedent that films like Thor: Ragnarok and Ant-Man would soon follow of combining action with humor as a consistent tone of the film. The film, which also became known for its '80s nostalgia, was followed by Vol. 2 and will be joined by Vol. 3 in 2023.
According to James Gunn, the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be his last film in the Guardians franchise. The director did a Q&A on his Instagram account where he revealed that the upcoming Guardians installment will likely be his last, because it finishes the story he began with the first volume. He adds that the reason he is not being entirely concrete about it is because he wants to leave the possibility for another film, like many directors who go back on their word of finalizing franchises, but that the upcoming film is the end for him and for the actors. Read his responses below:
Gunn was initially kicked off of the third film due to some old insensitive tweets of his resurfacing but has since been reinstated as the film’s director. While Gunn was removed by Disney and Marvel, he branched out his superhero wings further by joining the DCEU and directing The Suicide Squad, the upcoming standalone sequel to 2016’s Suicide Squad. However, though Vol. 3 will be Gunn’s last Guardians film, it is definitely not the only Guardians project he is working on. Gunn is slated to write and direct The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which takes place between Vol. 2 and Vol. 3 and is set to premiere on Disney+ in 2022. Additionally, he will be working on the Disney+ spinoff series, I Am Groot. And to top it all off, Gunn is advising the creation of the highly anticipated Guardians themed attraction that is currently in construction at Disney World.
Though wanting more of the Guardians is only natural, it’s a good thing that Gunn and the team behind Guardians is ending the film franchise with Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3. Ending the franchise in a way that services the story is indicative of a finale that proves it earned its praise and fanbase all the way through. And hopefully it will be a finale deserving of its place within the MCU overall.
