Does The Hate U Give Have A Post-Credits Scene?

The Hate U Give adapts the beloved young adult novel of the same name into a compelling coming-of-age movie - but does it have a post-credits scene? In early 2017, Angie Thomas debuted her first novel with The Hate U Give, which quickly became a best-seller and has since gone on to earn a number of awards and accolades, including the Coretta Scott King Award. Given the success of the novel, it comes as little surprise it's already been adapted to the big screen. George Tillman Jr. directs The Hate U Give from a script by Audrey Wells.

The Hate U Give follows teenager Starr Carter (Amandla Stenberg), who lives in a poor, mostly black neighborhood with her family while attending private school in an affluent, mostly white suburb. One night on the way home from a party, Starr witnesses the murder of her childhood friend Khalil (Algee Smith) at the hands of a white police officer. In addition to the typical high school milestones - like prom - Starr must also deal with her grief for Khalil and the decision of whether to speak publicly as the only witness of the shooting.

After its premiere at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival last month, The Hate U Give is one of the more highly anticipated dramas of the fall. However, while some fans may be hoping an extra scene following the credits, The Hate U Give doesn't have a post-credits scene. The main plot of the film wraps up before the credits roll.

The Hate U Give not having a post-credits scene shouldn't come as too much of a surprise for fans of the novel. Thomas' book, while popular, is decidedly standalone and doesn't really leave room for a sequel. As such, it's unlikely the studio would want to put a potential sequel stinger after the credits - which is often what post-credits scenes do for the films in which they're included. Still, even standalone movies include fun extra scenes at the end of the credits. But again, The Hate U Give doesn't do that, and it makes sense considering the serious issues and themes it tackles.

While The Hate U Give isn't launching a movie series, it is gearing up for a competitive awards season. Reviews from its premiere at TIFF were positive, and remain so. It's likely these reactions prompted the studio to move up the release date for The Hate U Give, offering the film a more gradual roll out. Considering the strong performances of Stenberg and her supporting cast - not to mention Tillman's directing and Wells' writing - The Hate U Give has serious awards potential. For now, fans will have to wait to see how The Hate U Give fares during awards season, but viewers should know they don't need to wait through the credits for a button scene.
