The Mandalorian: First Look at Jon Favreau's Star Wars Live-Action TV Show

Lucasfilm reveals the first look at Jon Favreau's live-action Star Wars TV show, The Mandalorian. The Walt Disney Company is looking to get into the streaming game by launching their own digital platform in 2019 - which has been reportedly titled Disney Play - that will include a host of original movies and TV shows, as well as a backlog of classic Disney movies and TV shows, which itself will include properties from Lucasfilm and Marvel Studios.

While there are a number of original projects in development, one of them, in particular, has caught the attention of Star Wars fans. In addition to appearing in Ron Howard's Solo: A Star Wars Story earlier this year, Favreau has been hard at work developing the very first live-action Star Wars TV series, which he confirmed yesterday to be titled The Mandalorian. It's set in the time between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, and it centers on a lone gunfighter, presumably the eponymous character, traversing the galaxy far, far away.

Lucasfilm confirms The Mandalorian has begun production and even released the first look image at the titular character. Furthermore, they reiterate what Favreau revealed in his social media post yesterday, that the series takes place in the time after the fall of the Empire, following a character who travels a galaxy outside the reaches of the New Republic. Take a look the photo:

Since production only just begun on The Mandalorian, there is still quite a bit that's unknown about the project. But the fact that it takes place between the events of the original and sequel Star Wars trilogies is quite telling. It's a time period that Lucasfilm continues to explore, and the idea that they are interesting in further exploring the Mandalorians on screen is wonderful for both longtime Star Wars fans as well as franchise newcomers, who want a more grounded take on the franchise. Putting the focus on the Jedi and Sith again would've potentially made fans disinterested in the story, but perhaps not the series as a whole.

Again, this is the first time that a live-action Star Wars TV show has ever been made, and the fact that Disney and Lucasfilm have given it a massive production budget for season 1 to get it right is already showing in this first look image. The quality is that of a big-budget movie, and that level of production will show due to the talent involved behind the scenes, including Favreau himself.
