The Last Kingdom Season 3 To Premiere On Netflix In November

Fans of the sword and shield drama The Last Kingdom won’t have to wait much longer for season 3, as Netflix announces the series will launch this November in both the U.S. and the U.K. The third season will also have two additional hours, upping the usual episode count from eight to ten. That will likely be welcome news for fans of the series, as it makes the switch from BBC Two and BBC America to a Netflix exclusive series.

Based on The Saxon Stories, by Bernard Cornwell, The Last Kingdom follows the story of Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon) and works in the tradition of History’s Vikings, using real history as the backdrop to a fictionalized storyline. The series takes an unflinching but still appealing look at the hardscrabble lives of late 9th century kingdoms, as they fight for survival against invading Vikings (oddly enough), while also working to build a future for themselves.

Season 3 is set to bring about plenty of change for the series, as it welcomes new characters, like “Ola Rapace (Skyfall) as Danish warrior Bloodhair, Thea Sofie Loch Næss (One Night in Oslo) as the dangerous seer Skade, Timothy Innes (Harlots) as King Alfred’s heir, Edward, and Magnus Bruun (Sprinter Galore, The Bridge) as Cnut.” Take a look at the trailer and synopsis for the new season below:

“The new season will see King Alfred consider his legacy, as his dream of uniting the kingdoms of England is jeopardised by incessant Danish attacks. Alfred knows that the only man with the power to crush the uprising and secure the Wessex dynasty is the great warrior and hero Uhtred, but when their volatile relationship reaches breaking point, Uhtred must confront the difficult truth: if he deserts Alfred’s cause, everything he has fought for will be forever changed.”

With a set of new characters and challenges awaiting the series’ regular cast, and with two more hours in which the series can tell its story, The Last Kingdom season 3 might well be its most ambitious. And with the series making the jump to Netflix, it may find a wider audience than before, especially among those eager to binge something with swords and amor and massive battle sequences, while they wait for new season of Vikings or the final season of Game of Thrones. Plus, those who haven’t yet tuned in can get caught up easily enough, as the first two seasons are currently streaming on Netflix.
