There’s a ghost train lurking in Red Dead Redemption 2 and it’s not all that hard to find. Like any good open-world game, Red Dead Redemption 2 is full of secrets and Easter eggs. The best are of the more spooky variety, like a UFO in the middle of the Wild West or Bigfoot, and the ghost train is no exception to that rule. It’s not a replacement for the original Red Dead Redemption’s excellent zombie-themed DLC campaign Undead Nightmare but it’s nonetheless cool.
The ghost train isn’t just an off-the-wall inclusion either. It seems to be a direct reference the Super Nintendo classic RPG Final Fantasy VI, which had a ghost train of its own. Red Dead Redemption 2's ghost train looks eerily similar to Final Fantasy VI's version, thus making it more than a superficial connection. Luckily, Red Dead Redemption 2 doesn’t require players to play through hundreds of randomly generated battles to find the spooky locomotive, though.

The hardest part of locating the ghost train is knowing where to look. Railroads aren’t quite as prominent in Red Dead Redemption 2 as they were in the original game due to the game being a prequel. There are still quite a few railroads to come across in Red Dead Redemption 2’s world, but not all of them will lead to a ghost train appearance. In order to find the ghost train, Red Dead 2’s protagonist Arthur Morgan must head to the northwest region of Lemoyne in the middle of Scarlett Meadows. It's right next to the in-game sign that welcomes characters to Lemonye.
Once at the right spot, Arthur must wait until around 3:00 in the morning. By immediately heading over to the nearby train tracks on his horse, Arthur should be able to see and follow the ghost train as it makes its post-midnight trip. The ghost train is relatively small compared to Red Dead Redemption 2’s other trains, particularly ones involved in train robberies, but it’s unmistakable once it appears.
There is a possibility that the ghost train won’t show up on first try. If the ghost train doesn’t show up by the time the sun starts to rise in the morning, then Arthur must camp out and sleep until the next morning at 3 am. With enough persistence, Arthur’s horse will begin to whine and stamp his feet heralding the ghost train’s imminent arrival.
Unfortunately, there’s no tangible in-game reward for tracking down the ghost train like an expensive Red Dead Redemption 2 gold bar. The reward is the experience and the story itself. Yet there are reasons to head into Lemonye and Scarlett Meadows for other benefits. The ghost train will often spawn right next to the location of Red Dead Redemption 2’s legendary wolf. The train won’t help Arthur kill the beast, but while wasting time waiting for it to show up, it’s rather simple to pick up the trail of the wolf, hunt it down, and sell its lucrative pelt to the Trapper (assuming they’ve been found). If the wolf has already been hunted down, the ghost train is still worth checking out if Arthur happens to be at the right place and at the right time.
