Rogue One Prequel Starring Diego Luna Coming To Disney Streaming

Another live-action Star Wars series is coming to Disney's streaming service, and it'll be a Rogue One: A Star Wars Story prequel. Disney's interest in expanding the Star Wars IP generated standalone ideas that began with Rogue One in 2016. Now they are looking to bring Diego Luna back as Cassian Andor for their next live-action series.

While Star Wars is best known for their giant blockbuster movies, their next play is on Disney's streaming service. Jon Favreau is currently in the process of filming the first ever live-action Star Wars series, The Mandalorian, which is expected to launch with Disney+ next year. That said, the company doesn't just want a single series on their new platform and are returning to the Rogue One era for the next adventure.

Disney announced today that Diego Luna is returning to star as Cassian Andor in a new live-action series for Disney+. The series will be a prequel to the character's role in Rogue One, which is the only possibility given the entire squadron died. There is currently no showrunner attached to the project, but the press release did tease what the series will be about: "The rousing spy thriller will explore tales filled with espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire." Additionally, Luna shared his excitement to return to a galaxy far, far away, saying:

"Going back to the Star Wars universe is very special for me. I have so many memories of the great work we did together and the relationships I made throughout the journey. We have a fantastic adventure ahead of us, and this new exciting format will give us the chance to explore this character more deeply."

Following Favreau's The Mandalorian, this upcoming prequel series will be the second of potentially several other spinoff series' in the future. However, whereas Favreau's Mandalorian was developed fairly quickly, Star Wars fans may have to wait a bit longer for the Rogue One spinoff series to move forward. The press release for the series noted that production will begin sometime next year, but Variety's Justin Kroll tweeted that it could be much later in the year due to Luna's commitment to another season of Narcos.

This new Rogue One spinoff series is just the latest example of the Star Wars universe sticking close to the original trilogy timeline. Though there are plans to explore new terrain (see: Rian Johnson's upcoming trilogy and the new series from Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss), Disney and Lucasfilm are approaching this new format carefully - which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The series will likely focus on the earlier days of the Rebellion, meaning audiences might see characters like Mon Mothma (Genevieve O'Reilly), Senator Bail Organa (Jimmy Smits), or even characters from Star Wars Rebels show up. It even leaves room for a slightly younger Princess Leia or Darth Vader, though it's impossible to say. Updates are sure to pour in following the buildup towards Star Wars 9' December 2019 release.
