Supergirl Reveals DC's Manchester Black In New Photos

New photos for Supergirl introduce David Ajala as Manchester Black. The season 4 of The CW's Supergirl series is three episodes deep at this point and haven't wasted any time introducing new characters. Rhona Mitra as Mercy Graves and Robert Baker as Mercy's brother have proven to be major threats already, while the latest episode was almost solely focused on setting up Sam Witwer as Agent Liberty. The bad guys haven't been the only focus, though, with Nicole Maines being introduced prior to becoming TV's first transgender superhero.

These are just a few of the new faces that will have important roles in the new season of Supergirl. One of the other casting announcements that was made over the summer was David Ajala joining as Manchester Black. He's an antihero at heart in the pages of DC comics, and the first look at him in the show teases a team up with J'onn J'onzz (David Harewood).

The CW released several official stills from episode 4 "Ahimsa" of Supergirl season 4. While they provide new looks at Supergirl's new suit and what else is going on at CatCo, there are also three photos that help introduce Manchester Black. He's accompanied by J'onn and something may have gone wrong judging by the cut above Manchester's right eye and the police officer that comes to talk to them.

Manchester Black first appeared in Action Comics #775 in 2001 and came into conflict with Superman thanks to how he and his super team, The Elite, operated. Manchester has telekinetic abilities that aided him in his battles with Superman, but was ultimately defeated by the Kryptonian, served with the Suicide Squad for a short while, and eventually killed himself after Superman refused to. This may not be the exact arc that he'll have in the show, as Supergirl's version is described as someone who brings a knife to a gun fight, and wins, while still being someone who "easily deflects the brutality of his mission with his charm and sense of humor."

It's not yet clear how large of a role Manchester Black will have in Supergirl overall, and the upcoming episode will go a long way in determining whether or not fans will want him to be a large part of the season or not. Now that J'onn is off on his own and concerned with alien rights, the pairing of J'onn and Manchester could be an interesting one. Both are obviously connected through their telepathic powers, which could make them an even more formidable duo. That said, it remains to be seen whether they'll be working together, or if this encounter is just by chance and the beginning of them ultimately being enemies.
