Counting On star John David Duggar reveals that his wife Abbie Duggar, who is expecting their first child together, has been hospitalized while pregnant due to hyperemesis gravidarum. The new mom is having a lot of trouble in her first trimester.
John David and Abbie (nee Burnett) are expecting their first child just a year after their marriage in November 2018. Though a year may not seem like a very long time, many of the other Duggar children who have married were pregnant within a few months of marriage, so by Duggar-family standards, John David and Abbie are taking a slower start to their family. Abbie and John David were only together for a month before John got down on one knee, and the couple was together less than 6 months by the time they wed. The couple announced in August 2019 that they were expecting, and have recently shared that Abbie is suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum - also known as severe morning sickness. The same issues that Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton suffered from in all three of her pregnancies, and much like Abbie Duggar the Duchess was hospitalized for it during her first pregnancy.
In an interview with Us Weekly, John David shared that for his wife's symptoms, "hit her hard, and she down for probably seven weeks with severe morning sickness." Abbie, who is due in January 2020, was diagnosed with the condition officially and her husband said "she was hospitalized a couple times." John David said the couple made "multiple visits to the ER for dehydration. … She couldn’t eat, pretty much, or drink, or anything. So she was actually on IVs and had IVs at home." The soon-to-be dad said it's been a "pretty scary time." In order to make life as easy for his wife as possible, John David said that "anything I can get for her, I try to. I run to the store, [get] whatever she needs, just keep her as comfortable as possible when she's feeling bad."
The soon-to-be mom praised her husband for all of his effort as well, saying, "He's cooked for me. He's cleaned. He's just been an angel." Above all, John David says that he tries to "keep [Abbie] eating and just comfortable." Though she's been struggling with morning sickness, one craving Abbie has is apparently for okra. John David told Us that "our freezer is full of [okra]. She puts it in smoothies. She has it dry. She has it fried," so at least she's getting some nutrients.
John David and Abbie are one of numerous Duggar family couples that are currently expected to give birth in the upcoming months; the Duggar grandchildren population continues to steadily grow. The couple recently have celebrated their one year wedding anniversary and are all smiles despite Abbie's tough pregnancy. With season 10 of Counting On having just begun airing, the season will surely show more about the first year of John David and Abbie's marriage, as well as new courtships, all of Jim Bob and Michelle's new grandchildren, and plenty on what the rest of the Duggar children are up to.
Counting On airs Tuesdays at 9pm EST on TLC.
