Doctor Who is full of time warping convoluted plots. The fact that the show has held most of them together for over fifty years is a testament to the storytelling. But, when it comes to editing and shooting, there are bound to be little mistakes.
Like any show or film, Doctor Who has its fair share of continuity problems. When you're on a busy shoot with lots of things to do, somethings will accidentally be moved, shifted, or removed. Most of the time these mistakes don't get in the way, but, occasionally, they can get rather ridiculous.
10 Weirdly Healing Hands
"The Empty Child" is one of the most beloved episodes of the revival. The now-classic gas mask-wearing monster's line "are you my mummy?" has become a calling card for all Doctor Who fans. The episode also introduced Captain Jack Harkness for the first time, during a run-in with companion Rose.
After Rose slides down a rope tethered to a decoy balloon, her hands suffer rope burn. While the pair discuss the burns, the viewer can see Rose's hands, which appear completely unharmed. Later, during a close-up, you can see her hands are covered in burns.
9 Disappearing Headphones
In series two, the Tenth Doctor reteams with his former companion Sarah Jane Smith to investigate a creepy primary school. As it turns out, a bunch of batlike shapeshifting aliens are brainwashing the children via their computer studies.
In one scene, Mickey walks in on the students working on their computers. In this opening shot, all the kids are wearing large headphones. Mickey pulls the plugs on the computer and in the next shot, all of the headphones are gone. While they might have removed them immediately, it was a bit too quick to be believed.
8 Fading Years
Many of the stories written by Stephen Moffatt need to be airtight because they rely on so many twists and turns. Without attention to detail, many of his stories fall apart. While most of them work out just fine, even a near-perfect story like Blink can make mistakes.
In the abandoned house, the camera shows Sally Sparrow ripping off the wallpaper. In doing so, she accidentally removes some of the writing of the year 1969. Later on, when she returns to the home with her ill-fated friend Kathy, the year is written on the wall again in full.
7 Amy's Fashion Choice
Doctor Who has a long history of eclectic fashion. The Sixth Doctor was known for his horridly garrish overcoat, and the Fourth Doctor certainly loved a long scarf. But, apart from bowties, the Eleventh Doctor was briefly a fan of ponchos.
In the series five episode "Amy's Choice," she crafts the team some ponchos to combat the decreasing temperature of the TARDIS. When she cuts the holes, hers is the only one with a slit cut horizontally. Soon the shot changes, though, and the cut matches the same vertical cut as the other two ponchos.
6 Why Is The Wine Always Gone?
Series Six started off with a bang, opening with a two-parter episode that felt more consequential than most season finales. The opening sequence literally started with a bang with an impossible astronaut rising from a lake and assassinating the Doctor.
Before that, though, the Doctor and friends enjoyed a nice picnic on the lakeshore. In one shot, the Doctor stands to face off against the astronaut while carrying a bottle of wine. When the camera pans to him next to the astronaut, the wine bottle is completely gone.
5 Hiding Candlesticks
Doctor Who has been scaring kids with Daleks, Cybermen, and Zygons for ages. But occasionally the show delves into real horror, featuring dark and spooky manors full of ghosts and spirits. "Hide" is the perfect example, blending the sci-fi narrative in with paranormal happenings.
The episode might not be afraid of no ghosts, but it might fear its own continuity. In the scene where the spinning disk appears, Clara can be seen holding a Candleabra with three candles. In a later shot, it only contains two, only to later feature three again. Perhaps the ghost borrowed one for a bit.
4 Shifting Hairpin
Peter Capaldi's first run saw him butting heads with his companion Clara. This iteration of the Doctor was far more curmudgeonly and grumpy than past regenerations, but "Mummy on the Orient Express" eventually repaired the relationship between the two travelers.
Sadly, it didn't fix the series' continuity issues. In the final scene, Clara is shown wearing a hairpin. In multiple shots, the hairpin changes sides, showing her part to be either on the left or ride side of her head.
3 Handmine Disappearing Act
The Doctor loves his Sonic Screwdriver and rarely lets anyone else use it. Occasionally a companion might borrow it, but, for the most part, the Doctor has sole ownership of the noise-making tool. So, it might be surprising to some to see him offer it to a young Davros.
In "The Magician's Apprentice," the Doctor tosses his sonic to the future creator of the Daleks. The camera shows that it lands in a clear area, away from the fatal grasp of the handmines. When the camera looks back to Davros picking it up, it is right next to a handmine.
2 Shifting In The Staircase
"Knock Knock" was one of the weirdest and worst episodes of Doctor Who in recent memory. Still, it was nice seeing Bill as a normal twenty-something looking for flatmates. But, apparently, her flatmates can teleport.
In one error, her new flatmate Paul assists Bill in carrying some boxes up the stairs to her room. The shot downstairs shows Bill heading up the stairs with Paul behind. When they reach upstairs, Paul has somehow moved in front of Bill up this small set of stairs.
1 Flashlight, Gun, Flashlight
Series eleven saw a lot of changes to the series. This was the first series to feature a female incarnation of the famous Timelord, brought back an ensemble cast, and featured no two-parter episodes. One tradition it did keep was continuity errors.
In the finale, the companions can be seen chased through the halls of the ship carrying nothing but their flashlights. In another shot, those flashlights turn to the guns owned by the robotic pursuers. Finally, the shot returns to them carrying only flashlights.
