Joker Movie Director Hasn’t Talked To Joaquin Phoenix About A Sequel

Fans everywhere are discussing a potential sequel to Joker, but apparently director Todd Phillips hasn't even spoken to Joaquin Phoenix about it yet. Joker ended up being one of the biggest movies of 2019, grossing over $1 billion. The film has returned to IMAX theaters for a limited time, something not given to many films.

As the awards season approaches, Joker remains a big discussion point. The film was nominated for four Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture. Many viewers agree Joker is a captivating feature, with a notable performance from Joaquin Phoenix. Its massive global success speaks volumes of how much it resonated with viewers. Even without opening in China, Joker would go on to become the most profitable comic book film of all time. Not many thought an R-rated thriller aimed squarely at adults would be more successful than films such as Wonder Woman and The Dark Knight. The movie quickly became one of the most talked-about releases of the year, due to pre-release controversy, its financial success, and the story itself. Naturally, fans are going over what can happen in a possible sequel. If a sequel does get made, it might be a bit because Phoenix hasn't been contacted yet.

Reacting to his Golden Globe nomination (via Variety), Todd Phillips discussed why Joker resonated with audiences. Unsurprisingly, the director cites Phoenix's performance as the major factor, jokingly referring to him during filming as the movie's "special effect." Interestingly, the two haven't spoken significantly about a sequel yet.

"Before we started shooting, I really knew how invested he was in this role and knew we possibly had something very special ahead of us. As for a sequel, it’s way too early [to tell]. I swear I haven’t even talked to Joaquin about that yet or what that would even be."

Although Phillips says he hasn't spoken to Phoenix, the actor did say back in October he's open to returning for the role. Interestingly, Phillips shot down a report saying Joker 2 was officially going forward. At the moment, it seems there is no sequel imminent for Joker, but it's certainly not an impossibility.

Joker was envisioned as a standalone feature, showing Arthur Fleck's descent into madness. A potential sequel could go many ways, although a number of fans want to see this world's version of Batman. Considering Bruce Wayne's parents died in the climax of Joker, it would not be unreasonable to anticipate the character in some form. For now though, Joker remains a unique look at one of comic's greatest antagonists. Even if one doesn't like the film, there's no denying Phoenix's performance had a raw quality to it. Joker hits Digital and Blu-ray soon, so a number of people will be experiencing the film for the first time.
