Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker’s Trailers Spoiled Two Big Twists

Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

One of the most beloved scenes in the first trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker turned out to be a major spoiler that ruined two of the movie's most suspenseful moments. While it has become something of a joke in recent years that modern movie trailers often give away the story of a movie, it is rare for a trailer to outright spoil the plot twists in the way that this scene did.

The early action of The Rise of Skywalker centered around the search for a Sith holocron. The ancient artifact held the key to locating the planet of Exegol, where a resurrected Emperor Palpatine had begun building a new fleet of Star Destroyers armed with experimental new technology. Dubbed The Last Order, this new threat would surely bring about the end of The Rebellion and The Jedi unless it was defeated before it had a chance to fully mobilize and leave Exegol.

While searching for the Sith Holocron, Rey had an encounter with Kylo Ren, shortly after Chewbacca had been captured by First Order soldiers. The two began to have a telekinetic tug-of-war over the ship containing Chewbacca, as it tried to escape the planet. The fight ended messily, as Rey seemingly lost control of her powers and sent a blast of Force Lightning into the ship, causing it to explode and all of its passengers to die a fiery death.

For a brief while, it looked like Chewbacca was dead and Rey was responsible for his death. However, it was revealed one scene later that Chewbacca was still in the First Order's custody and that Kylo Ren had only manipulated Rey into thinking she had lost control and killed her Wookie companion.  Still, this might have been a tense moment for viewers, had the first trailer for The Rise of Skywalker not included a prominent scene of Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian flying the Millennium Falcon together; a scene which stuck out in the minds of many fans, as it was the first confirmation that Billy Dee Williams was returning to the Star Wars franchise to recreate one of his most famous roles.

This scene also spoiled the final space battle of the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, as the heroes launched an assault on Exegol and the Last Order fleet, while Lando and Chewbacca tried to assemble a volunteer fleet to end the threat posed by the Emperor once and for all. The tension of this battle was built around the question of whether or not Lando and Chewie would arrive in time or if Poe, Finn and the rest of the main protagonists would have to sacrifice themselves to save the galaxy, like the heroes of Star Wars: Rogue One. Thanks to the trailer clip, it was all but certain that the two older heroes would arrive in time, leading the cavalry charge to save the day when all hope seemed lost.
