A TikTok video of an American embracing the UK pub chain Wetherspoons has gone viral. TikTok is known for creating viral content, although most of the time the content tends to remain within the TikTok community. This time, the video has gone viral thanks to the help of other social media platforms. Namely, Twitter.
In the UK, Wetherspoons is a very familiar site considering the ‘pub with food’ can be found in most cities throughout the country. In fact, it is so commonly encountered that few locals would consider it a place worth talking about, let alone sharing in a video on social media. However, it is a place that’s insanely cheap with the low prices being one of the brand’s major selling points. The low prices have now attracted the attention of social media - thanks to one TikTok user.
American Mallory Bartow traveled to the UK over Christmas and decided to document her UK experiences through TikTok videos. One of them was Bartow encountering one of the many Wetherspoons and letting other Americans know how cheap the prices are, and how good the food is. So far, the video has attracted more than 50 thousand views. While that’s half of what Bartow’s “Tesco'' (a UK grocery store) TikTok video has attracted, the Wetherspoons video found its way to Twitter. Since then, the tweet has gained over 100-thousand likes and the video has been watched more than 2.2 million times.
Brands looking to gain a social media moment is now almost as common as a Wetherspoons in the UK. Recently, Popeyes encapsulated the power of social media when videos of customers claiming the new Popeyes chicken sandwich was the best chicken sandwich ever went viral. The impact of the social media buzz continued to fuel demand and very quickly the Popeyes chicken sandwich sold out with the company recording one of its best quarters in history. Even more recently, the same sandwich made a triumphant return to the menu, as a permanent item, and continues to sell well. In contrast, the viral Wetherspoons video is unlikely to translate into anything near what Popeyes and other brands aspire to experience. The chain is so well-known in the UK that it is unlikely to see an uptick in sales by locals who already routinely visit. In fact, a significant number of those commenting on the posts are there to simply share their own - good and bad - ‘Spoons experiences.
As for Americans now planning to visit the UK and a Wetherspoons, they’ll likely be surprised by more than just the cheap food as the UK pub chain has become known for a number of different reasons. For example, although a chain, the brand tries to ensure each location is unique. Wetherspoons pubs often replace iconic-looking buildings such as movie theaters, churches, and even opera houses, while maintaining a lot of the original decor and style. There’s one in London where you can actually get married in the pub as part of an all-inclusive wedding package. The package is not quite as cheap as the food immortalized in this TikTok video, but it’s significantly cheaper than the average UK wedding costs.
