After five seasons of staying out of the underworld, Better Call Saul's Kim is finally "in the game" after having met Lalo Salamanca - but what does it mean for her husband, Jimmy McGill? The most recent episode of Better Call Saul was a huge one; not only did director Vince Gilligan call it the most difficult project he's ever worked on, but it also saw fan-favorite character Kim Wexler make a fatal mistake that could end up causing her and her loved ones their lives.
Since season 1, Better Call Saul has operated in two very distinct worlds: the world of legal practices, and the world of the cartel. On the legal side are characters like Chuck, Howard, and Kim - who are all lawyers for a living, and have nothing that would ever entangle them with the seedy underbelly of Albuquerque. Then there's the cartel side of things, where characters like Mike, Nacho, Gus and Lalo dwell - and they rarely have any reason to cross over into the dealings of the legal world.
However, ever since Nacho roped Jimmy into representing his boss Lalo Salamanca after Lalo was arrested for murder, the two sides of the show have been on a collision course, and episode 8 contained a major twist not many fans saw coming when Kim crossed over into the cartel's world. After Jimmy went to pick up $7 million in cash for Lalo's bail money and didn't return home, Kim feared the worst and went to the jail to confront Lalo about her husband's whereabouts.
The reason their meeting is such a big deal is that Kim Wexler is conspicuously absent from Breaking Bad, which has led fans to speculate from day one as to why she isn't a part of Jimmy/Saul's life. Many are worried that her absence means that she isn't alive during the events of Breaking Bad. Given that a mild-mannered lawyer wouldn't have a reason to fear for her life, though, fans have been stumped as to what could lead to her demise - until now.
When Kim goes to visit Lalo in prison, she inadvertently gives him an incredible amount of power and puts herself in a very vulnerable position - Lalo now has leverage over Jimmy and knows details about his personal life that could lead to his downfall. In the cartel business, your loved ones can and will be used against you by others to get you to do their bidding - just look at Nacho Varga.
Nacho has wanted out of the cartel for several seasons, but he has no choice but to continue operating as normal because Gus Fring has threatened to kill his father. Gus knows that Señor Varga is Nacho's weak spot, so he exploits it to his advantage - and now that Lalo knows that Jimmy has a wife who is willing to confront a cartel boss to find her husband's whereabouts, it's likely that she may be used as leverage in a similar way.
Going forward, Kim has accidentally put both herself and Jimmy in more danger than ever before - because the cartel now knows they're connected, they could be used against each other, and Kim may even be tortured or killed if Jimmy makes a misstep of fails to do Lalo's bidding. Although it's a frightening thought, Kim's introduction to Lalo could be the beginning of the explanation as to why she isn't in Breaking Bad.
