The PlayStation 5 controller, the DualSense, was only just unveiled, but excited fans are already making mock-ups of an all-black version of the two-toned gamepad. The next-gen console wars are finally starting to heat up with announcements regarding the dueling specs of the Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5. Even though rumors persist that the current COVID-19 coronavirus crisis might push the launch of these new machines into 2021, both Sony and Microsoft continue to hold fast to their projected next-gen console release windows of "Holiday 2020."
While Microsoft was first out of the gate with a lot of information regarding the specs of the Xbox Series X, Sony followed suit recently, delivering an hour-long presentation from system architect Mark Cerny about the technological capabilities of the PlayStation 5 hardware. Meanwhile, Microsoft revealed the visual design of the new Xbox back during The Game Awards, while audiences still have yet to learn what the PlayStation 5 system will ultimately look like.
Ever since the DualShock redesign for the original PlayStation controller, the name has stuck around, with subsequent PlayStation controllers being called the DualShock 2, 3, and 4. The only exception was the original PlayStation 3 controller, which featured the Sixaxis controller, lacking rumble, but gaining motion controls. Even so, the Sixaxis was quickly replaced with the DualShock 3 after only a couple of years. Though the design of the PS5 still remains a mystery, Sony finally unveiled the DualSense, the next-generation controller that players will use to navigate the new system. While the response to the DualSense has been positive thus far, fans are already clamoring for a color update to the white controller, hoping for a black version. Check out this mock-up by Twitter user @lenadrofranci, as well as other responses, below:
Some like the two-toned design of the DualSense, while others would prefer a solid black or white design. In the past, Sony has invested in colored variants of their first party controllers, and it's likely that trend will continue with the PlayStation 5's DualSense. Hopefully, fans will be able to play with solid black DualSense gamepads at the launch of the PS5, or at least shortly thereafter.
Regardless of the color choice, the DualSense has an appealing form factor, with redesigned handles, different triggers, a redesigned PS button, and other tweaks; for instance, the Share button of the PS4 has been replaced with the new Create button, though Sony is currently quiet on what new utilities the Create button may bring to the table. If implemented properly, the new haptic feedback feature could be a serious game-changer for PlayStation 5 users, allowing for greater immersion than traditional rumble. Hopefully, for the sake of excited fans everywhere, the DualSense will be available in black.
