In recent years, viewers have seen Netflix take the proverbial axe to some of their most beloved shows, with some shows only lasting 1 or 2 seasons - 3 if Netflix were feeling particularly generous. The streaming platform has been relentless in canceling shows they deemed to have been underperforming based on their ratings. However, some of these shows have been exceedingly popular among viewers and yet, have been canceled anyway. It's difficult to predict what Netflix will and won't cancel next since it all seems like a rather bad game of Russian roulette.
On the other hand, there has also been a wave of trainwreck original shows canceled by Netflix that have absolutely deserved it. Shows that felt like they shouldn't have been made in the first place and when they're canceled, the axe doesn't feel as unjustified. Below are 5 Netflix original shows that deserved the axe and 5 that didn't.
10 Didn't Deserve It: Jessica Jones
Jessica Jones was probably one of the best Marvel tv shows to date, it was nuanced, innovative and the performances (especially in season 1) were fantastic. Jessica Jones is a complex, tortured hero but Krysten Ritter gave a refined performance that bestowed a fresh perspective to the character.
Netflix announced the cancellation shortly before airing season 3 and broke our collective hearts. It was sad to see the character go and if it was not for the release of Disney+, Netflix's Jessica Jones would have probably continued to grace our screens.
9 Deserved It: Hemlock Grove
Hemlock Grove was a mistake from start to eventual finish. The show was an embarrassing combination of cliched storylines and overused horror tropes, the performances weren't great either.
It was evidently a show that was mind-numbingly difficult to watch if you could even get past the first few episodes. It was no wonder that eventually, Netflix took the plunge and decided to finally cancel the show.
8 Didn't Deserve It: Santa Clarita Diet
In cases of good TV, viewers feel cheated out of a good ending to a show that they have invested some serious time into. Santa Clarita Diet was one of those shows. It was funny, it was fresh and the on-screen chemistry between Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant was particularly praised.
Netflix canceled Santa Clarita Diet in April 2019 and fans were outraged because the final season ended on the most frustrating, rip out your own hair cliffhanger - fans felt thwarted by this and took to the internet to create petitions and voice their indignation at the cancelation of this beloved show.
7 Deserved It: Iron Fist
Iron Fist was undeniably one of the worst Marvel shows that Netflix had created. Everything about it was embarrassingly below average. The performances were mediocre at best, the script flat and tedious and the character of Iron Fist generally was laid to waste here.
It was surprising that it even made it to 2 seasons in the first place but thankfully, Netflix realized the mistake they made and Iron Fist finally got the axe that it so painfully deserved.
6 Didn't Deserve It: Sense 8
Sense 8 was another show that hit fans pretty hard when Netflix announced its cancelation after a mere 2 seasons. Boasting an impressive tomato meter score of 86% and having a devoted following, the cancelation of Sense 8 seemed somewhat undeserved.
It was subtle, different, and flirted with some careful but daring topics that made it a huge success overall. Despite this apparent popularity, it sadly did nothing to save Sense 8 from the dreaded chop. However, after a massive fall out from fans, Netflix released a special which they hoped would satiate fans of the show by giving them a more conclusive ending. Unfortunately, it didn't and Sense 8 remains unfinished in the eyes of its fans.
5 Deserved It: Luke Cage
Luke Cage is such an average Marvel character that it's really surprising that a whole show was conceived focusing solely on him. He was an intriguing character when he first appeared in Jessica Jones and the relationship between the two was powerful, however, he was only interesting when paired with the beguiled heroine.
The show received generally positive reviews as a whole for its two-season run and whilst it had impressive visuals and solid performances throughout, Luke Cage felt mundane. Due to artistic differences between Netflix and the writers of the show, Netflix decided to cancel Luke Cage during the development of its 3rd season.
4 Didn't Deserve It: The Get Down
The Get Down was released in August 2016 and was canceled quickly after the wrap up of the first season. However, Netflix did release part two the following year which concluded the show. They also announced that it would definitely not continue.
The Get Down was smart, funny, and brilliantly showcased the birth of Hip Hop. The show's cast was vast and extremely talented and the stylized music was probably the best thing about the show. At least viewers got a follow-up second part with this show, which is more than most others got and should have satisfied fans despite its cancelation.
3 Deserved It: Gypsy
Gypsy only managed to pass the season 1 mark before getting canceled a few months after release, making it quite possibly, the swiftest cancellation that Netflix has performed.
Despite the praise that Naomi Watts received for her engaging performance as the central character, this very short drama failed to impress critics and most importantly, it's viewers. This is a shame as Gypsy boasted some truly talented actors, but its lackluster storyline was a major blunder and the repercussions were instantaneous.
2 Didn't Deserve It: The OA
The OA was probably the most underserved cancelation. With such a unique and mind-bending concept, this show scarcely got a chance to fulfill its comprehensive storyline. Creator, producer, and lead of the show Brit Marling showcases her boundless talent here. The show's visuals, performances, and social impact were endlessly praised.
Considering the creators of The OA had 5 seasons planned for the show, the sudden and unexplained cancelation was a proper kick in the teeth for devoted fans who now, will never get to see the conclusion of this excellent show.
1 Deserved It: Chambers
Another show that was shelved quickly after release, Chambers was canceled after only 1 season. With good reason perhaps as Chambers utilized some concepts that have been seen over and over in so many other horror tv-shows and it was just awfully tiresome to watch.
The performances were strong but that singular saving grace failed to separate it from all the other shows that followed a similar storyline and concept, so it was axed. After its cancelation, the show was soon forgotten, as expected.
