Vin Diesel teases that the script for Riddick 4: Furya is almost done being written. Considered by many to be Diesel’s breakout role, the franchise began in 2000 with Pitch Black. It has since grown to include three live-action sequels, an animated feature, several video games, and two novelizations. The series follows Riddick, an antihero that is a member of a warrior race of adapted human who were obliterated by a military campaign. One of the last of his kind, Riddick is distinguished by his eyes, which allow him to see in the dark but also makes him vulnerable to intense light. Because of this, the character wears tinted goggles for protection.
In Pitch Black, which was c0-written and directed by David Twohy, Riddick was depicted as a dangerous criminal. While being transported to prison in a spacecraft, an emergency landing leads Riddick to escape on what appears to be an empty desert planet. Riddick is soon attacked by aliens, joining forces with the surviving crew and other passengers in an attempt to make it out of the planet alive. Pitch Black grossed more than $53 million against a budget of $23 million. The sequel, officially titled The Chronicles of Riddick, was released in 2004. The third installment, titled Riddick, came out in 2013.
Blending horror with action and sci-fi, and containing a number of memorable quotes, the franchise has maintained a fanbase since its premiere over two decades ago. News of the fourth installment has continued steadily over the years, helped by Diesel's occasional updates on the status of the script, and even revealing the film's title. Taking to Instagram, the megastar teased that the script for Riddick 4: Furya is almost done being written. The actor also offered a window into how he’s dealing with self-isolation. Check it out below.
Critically, the franchise has received mixed reviews. While the second entry of the series has proved to be the nadir among analysts, the franchise has earned praise for its sci-fi thrills and for turning Diesel into a household name.
Given the relatively long gap between the third and fourth installment and given the fact that the franchise’s lead has since been more closely linked to some of Hollywood’s biggest moneymaking blockbusters, Diesel might be better known as Dominic Toretto and Groot. Still, for those who associate the actor with the antiheroic warrior that made him famous, the tease about Riddick 4: Furya will definitely be welcomed. The time away may even result in the franchise’s strongest outing yet.
