Netflix's Dark is creepy, mind-melting, and an absolute pleasure to watch. Based in a town called Winden, the series is an outlandish take on time travel. The mysteries around the past, present, and future are beautifully revealed, with incredible background music, as well.
The twists in Dark are unmatched. So much so that the viewers might need a family tree to depict who comes into existence, where, and when? While Netflix renewed Dark for a 3rd season (which is set to be it's last), in the first two seasons, there are more than enough moments that are unpredictable. So, without further ado, let's take a look at the ten scenes even fans didn't see coming from the German show.
10 The Stranger is Jonas
When The Stranger first appears, he has no resemblance to Jonas. He has marks all over his face as if he was tortured. Yes, he is the one who guides (younger) Jonas to the portal in the caves but at no point during their conversations, it feels like they are the same person, just from different time zones.
And the revelation is also beautifully done. When (younger) Jonas gets locked in Noah and Helge's bunker, The Stranger goes to meet him. (Younger) Jonas wants The Stranger to free him from the bunker but he doesn't. He then reveals that he is, in fact, Jonas Kahnwald from 33 years in the future, and if he frees (younger) Jonas from the bunker, he will never grow up to become The Stranger.
9 Mikkel Is Michael Kahnwald
Everything is connected - the past, present, and the future. This scene just proves how Dark can absolutely blow the viewer's mind. When Mikkel disappears from 2019 and travels 33 years back into the past, he doesn't make it back, instead, he stays and marries Hannah (Jonas' mother).
To put things in context - Jonas is the son of Mikkel Nielsen, who is the brother of Martha and Jonas loves her. This means, without knowing, he is in love with his aunt.
8 Adam Is Jonas
This is another occasion where (young) Jonas has to deal with something incredibly tense. He is in 1921 and (young) Noah takes him to meet the Sic Mundus or The Travelers. There, Jonas meets Adam, who is the leader of the Sic Mundus and he wants this time cycle to play out exactly the way it always has. And to achieve that, he can do anything.
(Young) Jonas is the opposite of Adam, he wants this dreadful cycle to end. So, imagine the surprise when Adam says that he is Jonas Kahnwald, only 99 years into the future.
7 Claudia Lets Her Father Die
When Claudia gets a time machine and travels into the future (2020), she enters the public library and searches what happens to her and her father in the future. There, she gets to know the date of her father's death.
Back in 1987, her father's death day arrives. Claudia tells him that he is staying with her but Egon (Claudia's father) wants the police to search the cave as he thinks some supernatural things are at play here in Winden. Of course, Claudia knows about them and she cannot risk it being revealed to the public. Thus, she has a spat with her father and Egon slips, falls, and starts bleeding. Claudia doesn't call the police and lets her father die, in an incredibly sad scene.
6 Ulrich Beats (Kid) Helge
After going through the portal in the caves, Ulrich lands in 1953. He is shocked but his police brain finds a solution. He thinks that if he takes care of (kid) Helge now, he wouldn't abduct and kill his brother Mads in the future.
So, he meets (kid) Helge but the child makes a run for his life. Unfortunately, Ulrich catches him and mercilessly hits the kid on the side of his head with a rock. Even though (kid) Helge doesn't die, it really makes the viewers think what Ulrich is capable of.
5 Agnes Kills Noah
After finding the pages of the book, Noah realizes that Adam was just using him and manipulating him. So, Noah decided to kill Adam and he approached him with a gun.
But because Adam has seen everything, he doesn't panic as he knows there are no bullets in the gun. Then, Noah's sister Agnes comes from behind and kills her brother, much to the shock of the viewers.
4 Adam Kills Martha
On the day of the apocalypse in 2020, (young) Jonas goes to his house to find his mother Hannah. But, he meets Martha there, instead and soon, Adam joins them to interrupt a romantic moment.
After some back and forth between Jonas and Adam, the latter shoots and kills Martha, telling Jonas that this pain is essential for him to convert into Adam in the future. Of course, (young) Jonas is thinking - Why me?
3 Charlotte's Family Background
This is a really complicated one. Charlotte Doppler has always wondered who her real parents were as she grew up with H. G. Tannhaus who wasn't related to him. The first shock comes when Noah confronts Charlotte and tells her that he is her father.
The bigger twist is that Elisabeth is her mother. To put things into context - Elisabeth is Charlotte's daughter who grows up to marry Noah in the future and their kid, that is Charlotte is taken away from them. One can assume that Charlotte is brought back to the 1980s, where this same cycle resumes.
2 Jonas Continues The Cycle Of Time
Another scene that is sure to give the viewers some headaches is this one. In order to alter the cycle, (young) Jonas reaches 20th June 2019. He approaches his father Michael who, according to the cycle, will commit suicide the next day.
So, (young) Jonas meets Michael, tells him he is from the future and pleads with him to not commit suicide. But he is shocked to hear that Michael wasn't planning on killing himself. Michael says that that (young) Jonas might be there to make sure he commits suicide. Even the letter (young) Jonas brings might be to tell Michael exactly what he needs to write before his suicide. This scene is sure to blow your mind.
1 Otherworldly Appearance
After Adam kills Martha (who's wearing a white dress), (young) Jonas stays behind crying and moaning her loss. All of a sudden, another Martha comes inside the house, only this one is wearing black, which shocks Jonas.
He asks Martha what timeline she is from. And Martha replies - "The question is what world I am from?" What an incredible way to end season 2 that was.
