By now, fans of Grey's Anatomy are very familiar with the emotional trauma the show has put them through. Ever since the plane crash of season 8, the series has found a way to crush their spirits. Lexie died after succumbing to her injuries in the crash. Not long after, Mark followed after his life support was switched off. Just as fans were moving on, Grey's then took McDreamy away...
While some mourned the loss of a great and compassionate surgeon, others were relieved as it meant Meredith could succeed without him holding her back. Go to on any fan page and you will see a fierce debate on whether Derek is an overrated or underappreciated character. What do you think of Dr. McDreamy?
10 Overrated: Power-Hungry
While many fans praise Derek for his tenure as Chief, did no one else think he could be so manipulative and cruel? It shouldn't have come as a surprise considering what he did to get the position. Not only did he betray Meredith's trust but he also used Webber's disease as a stepping stone in his career.
Fans also thought it was unfair of Derek to refuse Teddy a contract when he was going to give Izzie a second chance and gave April one too. It seemed Derek always had an agenda in mind that would only benefit him or Meredith.
9 Underrated: His Compassionate Nature
While Derek may be seen as an overrated surgeon, fans should at least credit him for his compassionate nature. It's not surprising that many patients find comfort in Derek's presence considering how attentive and kind he is. He listens to their concerns and ensures the patient feels comfortable before he takes them into the theater.
A few examples of this can be seen in season 4 during the clinical trials. Remember how he waited for a patient's boyfriend to show up despite everyone saying he was imaginary? Or how he helped a young couple to spend time together before their operations? Fans can't forget him comforting the teen who lost her friend in the bus crash.
8 Overrated: Treatment Of Meredith
While fans believe Meredith and Derek are the show's ultimate OTP, now might be a good time to give the title to another couple. As fans rewatch the series, some have begun to notice how badly Derek treats her. Despite choosing Addison, Derek degraded and judged Meredith for trying to move on.
Although they had been dating for five minutes, he tried to make her evict Alex and Izzie from her house. Let's also not forget how he told Meredith his career was more important and cheated on her while he was in Washington. Meredith is better off without him.
7 Underrated: Fighting For Cristina
While Cristina and Derek didn't share a lot of moments, fans should give him credit for helping her with her PTSD. After Cristina's PTSD overwhelms her, Derek asks Webber to assign her to him after the Chief suggests putting her on administration, threatening to leave himself if she quits.
When this doesn't work, Derek creates another plan and takes her fishing with him. Here, the viewers saw a breakthrough as Cristina begins to come to terms with her condition. Throughout all this, Derek remained patient and calm.
6 Overrated: Treatment Of Amelia
Considering he once told Meredith he would want his family around him if he was dying, it's ironic that he can barely stand to be in the same room as them. In fact, he's proven he's no brother of the year with the way he treats Amelia.
Derek would patronize Amelia about her surgical skills and didn't defend her when a patient exposed her addiction and undermined her authority in the O.R.. Derek also tried to get her fired. Despite the promise he made their mother, Derek didn't look after his sister very well at all.
5 Underrated: Friendship With Lexie
While Derek failed to be a big brother for Amelia, at least he managed to step up for Lexie whenever she needed him most. As soon as Derek found out Lexie was Meredith's sister, he took her under his wing. When she was having issues at work, Derek invited her to stay with him and Meredith until she got herself together.
In season 8, their friendship blossomed even more when Lexie became his protégé and he provided her with emotional support over Mark. It was kind of sweet when Lexie called him her big brother; it showed fans how much Derek impacted her life.
4 Overrated: His Grudges
When it came to his professional work, Derek did his best to keep the "McDreamy" facade in place. However, if someone double-crossed him or wronged him, then he could quickly turn into McNightmare.
When he found out about "Slexie," Derek stopped speaking to him. After the plane crash, he told Owen it was all his fault. The worst had to be when he argued with Meredith about how he gave up everything for her after turning his dream job down. It was all so petty.
3 Underrated: His Final Moments
By the end of his story, a lot of people began to believe Derek was so arrogant and selfish. However, the show did a good job of reminding the viewers that he wasn't always like this — as demonstrated by his final moments. Just before his death, Derek didn't hesitate to rescue and treat four people after witnessing a car crash.
This was similar to his actions in the season 6 finale when he ran around the hospital, ensuring everyone was safe from the gunman. Fans shouldn't forget that he also risked his life to save Tucker Jones' life. Derek deserves to be remembered for his altruistic and noble acts.
2 Overrated: His Ego
Everyone knows what an exceptional surgeon Derek was. However, fans will agree that his talents were undermined by his arrogance and insufferable ego. Derek refused to recognize the talents of his sister and consider the thought she could be a better surgeon than him.
Despite performing an unauthorized-high risk surgery, he dared to dismiss Richard when the Chief fired him. Derek even refused to share credit with Meredith over "The Shepherd Method" — even though she did most of the work. This arrogance started to grate on the audience as time went on.
1 Underrated: Bailey's Confidant
On Grey's Anatomy, fans have seen a lot of unexpected friendships form. They had the pleasure of watching the dynamics between Richard and Arizona, the familial relationship between Jo and Ben, and the mentor-mentee bond that came with Cristina and Dr. Thomas. However, one underrated pairing is Derek and Bailey.
If fans rewatch the show, they would notice Bailey and Derek share a few tender moments. When Bailey got upset over an old crush, Derek comforted her. When George died, he also provided her with emotional support. Out of all the people in the hospital, Derek was one person she dropped her cold facade with.
