Thor Never Used Mjolnir's Secret Ability in The Movies

When Odin enchanted Mjolnir, the hammer of Thor, he imbued it with the God of Thunder's mystical powers. As fans of the MCU are now well aware, those powers include flight, enhanced strength, and the ability to summon lightning... but that’s not all Mjolnir can do in the original Thor comics. The hammer has a few other secret abilities that audiences never actually saw Thor make use of in the movies. And one of them would have seriously come in handy when facing villains like Thanos.

Believe it or not, Mjolnir is actually older than Thor himself. The hammer was created by Odin years before his son was born by trapping a cosmic storm inside a chunk of uru metal, which was then forged into Mjolnir by the dwarves of Nidavellir. Fans may remember that Nidavellir is also the birthplace of Thor’s hammer in the MCU - Thor travels there in Avengers: Infinity War with Groot and Rocket Raccoon to have Eitri the Dwarf forge him a new weapon with which to fight Thanos. This is after Mjolnir was destroyed by Thor’s evil sister Hela in Thor: Ragnarok, though the hammer did reappear in Avengers: Endgame thanks to some time travel shenanigans, where it was subsequently wielded by Captain America before being taken back to the past.

Unless the MCU has plans for more time travel in the future, it would seem Mjolnir’s days in the movies are over, which means we will likely never get to see its awesome energy absorption ability. This power actually dates back to the early days of Thor comics and has proved useful many times over the years. For example, in Silver Surfer #4, published back in 1968, Loki does what he does best and manipulates the Silver Surfer into fighting Thor. When Silver Surfer attacks Thor with the power cosmic, Thor easily absorbs the energy blast with Mjolnir.

But absorbing energy is just the first part of Mjolnir’s secret power. Once the hammer has the energy inside, Thor can redirect it back at his opponent. This is what he did Thor #22 from 1998 in his fight against Thanos. In this issue, The Mad Titan is after something called the Illumination Stone - as if the Infinity Stones weren’t enough. When Thor gets in his way, Thanos sends a massive blast of energy at him, which Thor absorbs with Mjolnir and sends back at Thanos, “its power magnified a hundred-fold!” According to The Recorder, a robot sent to observe, the blast was “capable of tearing the entire planet apart.”

It’s a shame that Mjolnir was destroyed before this power could be included in the MCU, but anything is possible. Mjolnir has been broken and reforged in the comics before, and some think that the hammer will return in the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder to be wielded by Jane Foster. If that is the case, a new-and-improved version Mjolnir may include more of the abilities from the comics.
