Big Brother 22: Fans Want to Get Ian Terry a Rocking Chair For His Autism

With this season of Big Brother 22: All-Stars in full swing during a worldwide pandemic, things are bound to be different. The reality show that dominates summer television delayed the start of the season by over a month in response to COVID-19. In addition, prospective houseguests had to quarantine for two weeks as well as pass multiple tests before entering the house. Additional precautionary measures have made this year's version of the familiar show unlike any of its previous seasons.

The popular series returned on August 5th, this time with past winners, fan favorites, memorable personalities, and some of the best players to never win the game competing for the grand prize. The action has started early, with Big Brother legends like Janelle Pierzina already getting eliminated from the house. For those still safe, the usual comfort provided by CBS has been limited — most notably, access to the backyard. With fewer crew members and tightened sanitation, time outside is one of the favorite amenities provided in the house that has been restricted.

The fresh air and sunshine of the outdoors provide much-needed relief to all the houseguests. This is especially true for one member of the cast. Ian Terry became a fan-favorite on season 14 for many reasons, including his takedown of Big Brother legend Dan Gheesling on his way to winning. In recent weeks, Terry has opened up about being on the autism spectrum to his fellow houseguests, and rocking in the hammock is a soothing mechanism when he feels overwhelmed. In response, fans have started a petition on Change.org to get Terry a rocking chair because "he has explained that the only thing that calms him down is rocking back and forth but he got a lot of hate for using the hammock due to its squeaking sound." The text under the petition continues, "The Houseguests will be given access to the backyard this season not as often as past seasons due to low crew members and sanitization. Thus giving Ian no way to calm himself down and help himself. We, the fans, would like CBS and Big Brother production to get Ian a rocking chair or anything that he can easily rock back and forth in."

The backlash from the hammock comes from Terry's previous season, where he notably was seen swinging in the hammock multiple hours every day. For viewers of the live feeds, this created a constant noise they were unable to mute or ignore. Despite the backlash, Ian never revealed his diagnosis, sticking true to his strict moral code that helped him win the $500,000 cash prize.

Big Brother fans are among some of the most passionate in all of television. Though criticized in the past for possibly creating toxic environments, moments and movements like this show the positive side of such passion. Even in a game meant to push you to your limits, some discomforts should be off-limits.
