What John Cena Could Look Like As Marvel Villain Sandman

New fan art imagines what wrestling legend and actor John Cena would look like as the Spider-Man villain and Sinister Six member Sandman. Cena is increasingly becoming a mainstream movie star, transitioning to blockbuster movies like previous WWE stars Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Dave Bautista. He made waves after having a small comedic role in the Judd Apatow-produced Trainwreck and will next star as The Peacemaker, a character Cena calls a douchey Captain America in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad.

The Sandman, on the other hand, has not done well on the big screen. Played by Thomas Haden Church in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3, The Sandman was one of three villains in the overstuffed sequel. While Church's performance can't really be faulted, the character was underwritten and sidelined in a movie that has become famous for being the worst in Raimi's trilogy. Sandman was also teased for a possible appearance in Spider-Man: Far From Home, but the movie revealed the creature to be a creation of the real villain, Quentin Beck/Mysterio.

Now, illustrator and concept artist Jackson Caspersz has created a piece of fan art that imagines what Cena would look like as The Sandman. Giving him four hands because he says the character doesn't have any exciting armor to draw, Caspersz's version is otherwise reasonably accurate. Cena's Sandman wears a green striped shirt and has appropriately muscular arms made out of sand. You can see the art below.

The concept itself is cool, and the addition of the extra arms, which take the shape of the head of a Morning Star and a large cinder block, is a nice touch. And Cena is an excellent choice to play the character. He has the right look, physically and certainly has the acting chops to play an entertaining and convincing villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Unfortunately, the character's reputation has been stained by his appearance in the much-maligned Spider-Man 3.

As a result, it would take a lot for audiences to accept a genuine version of the character, as opposed to the illusion seen in Far From Home. However, with Sony's plans to put together a Sinister Six movie as part of its Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters, there is potential for a new, updated, and more convincing version of The Sandman to be introduced. And whether Cena is cast in the role or not, this fan art proves he'd certainly look the part of the classic Spider-Man villain.
