Lovecraft Country’s Michael K. Williams Was Scared To Film Seance Scenes

WARNING: Spoilers for Lovecraft Country Season 1 Episode 4

Lovecraft Country star Michael K. Williams has admitted that he was hesitant to film the scenes that included magic seances. Lovecraft Country is the newest brainchild of Misha Green and is based on the eponymous novel by Matt Ruff. The series premiered this August on HBO.

The series revolves around Atticus Freeman, a young Black man who sets off to find his father Montrose, despite the dangers of a segregated, 1950s United States. However, Montrose may not be as innocent as initially deemed. In fact, while Atticus manages to track down his father, season 1 episode 4 ends as Montrose slits Yahima's throat while he tells her that he's sorry. Although Montrose's actions all seem to be geared towards helping his family, fans have begun to speculate that this is the beginning of seeing him start down a dark path.

In an interview with Collider alongside his fellow cast members, Michael K. Williams says the scenes he was most afraid to shoot was that of the seances. Williams explains that he was raised in a Caribbean household; his mother is from the Bahamas, and magic has been a topic of discussion in their home before. Although Williams' mother always said that there's no power in sorcery, "if you don't believe in it," Williams explains that he was still leery when filming any related scenes.

Although Montrose doesn't interact much with many of the monsters that appear in Lovecraft Country, he does dabble with black magic. In order to combat his uncertainty, Williams says that he kept "extra crystals" with him when his character recited black magic spells. He also adds that the experience made him "revisit the power of belief and faith," especially as he knows there are those out there who truly believe and practice sorcery. It sounds like a chilling experience, to say the least. However, considering the Sons of Adam cult that's at the center of the show, it seems Montrose's time with magic isn't over yet.

While Lovecraft Country delivers a bold, unfiltered perspective of what it means to be Black in America, it also cements itself as a supernatural horror show as well. For one, horror fans have already wholeheartedly embraced the various monster-filled scenes, from writing fan fiction about the show to creating fan art. That being said, while Michael K. Williams is treading lightly when it comes to the question of sorcery and dark magic, it seems his character of Montrose Freeman has no such reservations.
