Pixar is well known for its tear-jerkers, and Onward is no exception. Onward tells the story of two brothers, Ian and Barley Lightfoot, who go on a quest to find a Phoenix Gem which will allow them to bring back their father for a day. It's a gorgeous film that focuses on themes of family, loss, and love that everyone can relate to.
As with every Pixar movie, there are moments that can leave audiences in tears and scenes that could make anybody laugh. Onward has plenty of those moments, from learning magic for the first time and saying goodbye to a loved one, to going on a life-changing quest with your sibling.
10 Funniest: The Manticore's Tavern
When Barley and Ian embark on their quest to find the phoenix gem they need in order to bring the other half of their father back, they make their first stop at the Manticore's Tavern, which was meant to be a place where a frightening creature called the Manticore holds the map to the phoenix gem.
Since it's a modernized setting, the Manticore is just a stressed-out restaurant owner who uses the maps as kids menus and ends up having her own journey of self-discovery.
9 Saddest: Barley & His Dad
The quest to bring back Barley and Ian's father for a day holds special meaning to the whole family, and particularly to Barley, who didn't properly get to say goodbye to his father.
It's definitely one of the heavier parts of the movie because it's the moment where you realize Ian isn't the only one who desperately wants to see his father.
8 Funniest: Ian & Barley Dancing With Their Dad
Onward is full of lighthearted moments between family, and one of those moments is when Ian and Barley's Dad starts dancing. At first, they're a little confused by what's happening, but then they start to join in.
It makes for a really heartfelt scene in which they all dance together and forget about the fact that they've got limited time when really their father is right in front of them.
7 Saddest: Ian & Barley's Fight
Ian and Barley don't have a perfect relationship, and that's what makes Onward so relatable. Towards the end of the movie, when the two brothers realize that the map led them straight back to town, they have an argument that ends in Ian running away.
It's one of the saddest moments because they had come so far throughout the film, from Barley teaching Ian how to drive and actually having a fun quest, only for everything to come crashing down again.
6 Funniest: When Barley Teaches Ian Spells
One of the sweetest and funniest parts of Onward is when Barley starts teaching Ian spells, starting with a levitation spell.
Barley's only knowledge of magic comes from the trading cards he would collect, and thankfully they help the brothers a lot later on the film. Barley also teaches Ian how to make things grow and shrink, which ends in him shrinking Barley.
5 Saddest: Ian Not Getting To Meet His Father
At the end of Onward, Ian doesn't properly get to meet his father and instead lets Barley say a proper goodbye to him.
It's a gorgeous moment that shows how well Pixar deals with topics of family and loss, but it's also sad to see Ian not get to meet his father properly after going through all that trouble.
4 Funniest: The Pixies
Barley and Ian stop at a gas station that also happens to be over-run by pixies that don't use their wings but are instead part of a biker gang. They manage to annoy a bunch of them and end up on the run being chased by dozens of pixies on motorbikes.
It's ridiculous and funny, and it really shows how clever Pixar is for blending together the magical and the modern.
3 Saddest: Ian's Tape Recording
Ian's birthday didn't turn out well for him. None of his friends could come to his party and his brother embarrassed him by picking him up from school. To top it off, he gets a magical staff from his father and can't figure out how to use it.
One of the saddest scenes in Onward is when Ian listens to a recording of his fathers' voice and speaks as if he's having a conversation with him. It's quite emotional because Ian just wants to be able to talk to his dad and he doesn't even get to do that.
2 Funniest: When The Brothers Use A Cloaking Spell
After Ian and Barley out-run the pixies, they get pulled over by the police for speeding and have to find a way to disguise themselves.
Ian turns them into their mothers' boyfriend, Officer Bronco, who is a centaur and police officer. It's a really funny scene as they try their best to act normally without being questioned about what might be going on.
1 Saddest: When Ian Tries To Invite People To His Party
This scene isn't as sad as it is just hard to watch, and it's another relatable thing about Onward.
Ian struggles with fitting in, and when he asks some of his friends to come over for his birthday, it doesn't really go to plan. He gets nervous and then Barley interrupts and embarrasses him.
