Howard Wolowitz was The Big Bang Theory’s resident goofball. He was just as brilliant as his friends, but often got distracted by pretty women and nonsensical things. Nevertheless, Howard was an integral part of the friend group and the show wouldn’t have been the same without him.
Among the main cast, Howard is one of the characters who transformed the most. His belt buckles remained the same but he modernized his hairstyle and shirts. More than his physical appearance, Howard grew as a person, too. From his work to his friendships, let’s take a look at Howard’s slow transformation over the years.
10 Season One
After meeting Howard in the pilot episode, it was known early on that he was the group’s source of entertainment. He nearly fainted after meeting Penny in a towel for the first time and had no issues trying to flirt with her.
That was the thing about Howard, he had no shame in flirting with women who may have been out of his league. What did he have to lose? Some fans thought he got worse and worse after his shameless attempts, but he continued to try. Fans saw this kind of behavior again when Howard seduced Penny’s friend from Nebraska that was crashing at her apartment.
9 Season Two
Howard’s longing for a relationship carries into the second season, when the guys take him to Las Vegas to get over another heartbreak. To boost his confidence. Leonard and Raj found a hooker to make him feel better.
In this season, he also attempted to romance Dr. Stephanie (who ended up dating Leonard) and Summer Glau, but both efforts ended in sorrow. He may have struggled to pick up women because he wore dickeys and clothes from the 70s.
8 Season Three
By the third season, Howard was slowly starting to change. He wanted to be a monogamous man when he met Bernadette, but he wasn’t 100 percent ready to commit. Anyone would be proud to date Bernadette, but he needed time.
He decided to hide from her and stay on the path he had been on, even though it was self-destructive. Howard's classic style is a plain colored long sleeve shirt (or plaid shirt) with super tight pants and a large belt to match.
7 Season Four
Season four was a weird time for Howard. Instead of focusing on himself, he found the perfect woman for Sheldon, Amy Farrah Fowler. To be fair, he didn’t completely grow up in this season because it opened with Howard getting a body part stuck in a robot. However, he did eventually begin dating Bernadette and was torn between her and his needy mother.
Some fans thought Howard settled for Bernadette, but it became clear he adored her. He ultimately got closer to “Bernie” and proposed to her by the end of the season.
6 Season Five
Now that Howard was an engaged man, he stopped being creepy to women and focused on work and his friendships. It worked out nicely for him because he got the opportunity to work with Stephen Hawking and go to space.
While Bernadette wasn’t comfortable with Howard going to space, she couldn’t stand in his way. Seeing him take this role as seriously as he did was a huge moment for Howard. The two got married on a rooftop at the end of the season and he was off to space. Howard looked dapper in a tux, but fans were surprised he was the first one in the group to get married!
5 Season Six
At the start of the sixth season, Howard is in space and hating it. He's exhausted, has cabin fever, and isn't treated nicely. Once he returns home, he's shocked when his arrival doesn't erupt with cheers and hugs. He begins to spiral into a pit of darkness when all he can talk about is space.
It wasn't one of his best moments, and just when fans think that space changed Howard for the greater good, he takes a few steps backward. He's suddenly unsure if he should move out of his mom's home, he spends too much money on personalized figurines of Raj and him, and his lecture at his former middle school isn't as great as he expected. The turning point in this season was when Sheldon read a letter written by Howard's dad that was emotional enough to make any man-child snap out of it.
4 Season Seven
In season seven, Howard made a transformative move and moved into Bernadette's apartment. Now that they were married, it only made sense for them to have their own space that wasn't invaded by Howard's mother. Another small area of growth was his relationship with Sheldon.
The two are usually like oil and water, but in "The Locomotive Manipulation," Howard went on a Valentine's Day weekend getaway with Sheldon and Amy. He also faced his fear of apologizing to Raj's new girlfriend, Emily, after the two had a horrendous first meeting, years prior.
3 Season Eight & Nine
Howard exhibited no greater growth than in season eight, after his mother unexpectedly died. He was forced to become a man and assist with her ashes and all the responsibilities that came with taking over her house. He also quickly got over his former issues with Stuart since he was already living his Mrs. Wolowitz's home.
In season nine, Howard is finally ready to renovate his mother's home, which came at the perfect time because he and Bernadette were expecting a baby. He has a small breakdown over financially raising a child, but got his head together enough to create a new invention, which caught the eye of the military.
2 Season 10 & 11
Howard spends most of season 10 working on his military project with the gang and preparing for his baby until little Halley arrived. Howard may have started the series off as an egotistical sex-maniac, but by the 10th season, he's incredibly likable and relatable as a new dad.
In season 11, a lot has changed for the group. Sheldon was engaged, Leonard was married and living with Penny, and Howard and Bernadette were living happily ever after. And in a surprise twist, the Wolowitzs were shockingly expecting a second baby!
1 Season 12
Season 12 was the final season for the incredible series. Howard had finally come full circle. He went from a "horny engineer" who couldn't focus on work to a family man who went to space. The series ended on a good note because there wasn't much left for Howard to accomplish. Even his fashion choices got better!
