A change to how ghosts work in Among Us might be coming in a future update, according to developer InnerSloth. Among Us is a two-year-old free-to-play social manipulation game that has taken Twitch - and the internet at large - by storm, recently hitting a 3 million concurrent player count. The game tasks a group of up to 10 players to complete tasks on one of the game's three maps, with one to three Impostors in charge of killing everyone on board and sabotaging the operation.
Despite its rampant popularity, the game has some flaws. One much-maligned part of the game is what happens to ghosts after a player is killed by an Impostor or ejected from the station. Currently, players who have been eliminated can no longer participate in votes, call meetings, or report deaths; ghosts can only float around and complete any tasks they have left. Since it's possible to have finished all tasks before death, most players simply quit once they are killed. A player suddenly leaving is a fairly obvious tell that a murder has taken place, and along with the increasing hacker problem, it's definitely an area that needs improvement.
In a recent Twitch stream transcribed by Inverse, InnerSloth - a team of just three - was asked about possible changes to ghost gameplay. One question brought up adding the ability for ghosts to be able to open doors closed by Impostors. The developers admitted it was worth considering, before speaking about the need to improve how ghosts work. "We do want to make being ghosts more fun. If you get killed first, that sucks. Your game is boring," said developer Marcus Bromander. Forest Willard, the other developer along with Amy Liu, mentioned that the team had been thinking about making ghosts into "Guardian Angels."
"We’ve thought of a lot about [making ghosts into] Guardian Angels and stuff like that, but it’s a difficult thing to pull off but we’re definitely thinking about those sort of things."
A sequel to Among Us was recently canceled in favor of continued support for the current game, so more updates are certainly on the way that could improve gameplay. While the developer acknowledged that ghosts need improvement, it also stressed that it would not be simple to do without disrupting the rest of the game. A task to re-animate ghosts was mentioned and quickly dismissed, as a re-animated ghost would be able to identify their killer. A Guardian Angel ability could function similar to Doctor's role in Mafia: protect someone from a kill, with the target not even aware they almost met a grisly death.
Among Us is one of the comeback stories of the year, even overtaking another bean-based indie hit, Fall Guys, to become the most-streamed game on Twitch. If the game wants to keep its momentum, its three developers need to ensure that new updates keep its massive fanbase interested. Preventing players from quitting early would benefit everyone who has stepped onto a space station in Among Us.
Among Us is available on PC and mobile platforms.
