High School Musical: The Musical: The Holiday Special is coming to Disney+ in December, along with a first look at season 2. HSM: The Musical: The Series premiered on Disney's streaming service in 2019, eleven years after the massively popular musical film trilogy ended. The first season followed a new set of East High drama club students as they worked toward their production of High School Musical: The Musical. The ten-episode mockumentary-style series was a big hit as a launch title for Disney+, and HSM: The Musical: The Series has been renewed for season 2.
HSM: The Musical: The Holiday Special is hitting Disney+ on December 11 and will include a first look at season 2 of the series. According to Disney+'s official release, the 45-minute long episode will feature the cast performing Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year's songs while they share their “fondest holiday memories.” "The holidays remind us of the universal importance of family and loved ones," director and executive producer Tim Federle said. "The cast of 'High School Musical: The Musical: The Series' is its own kind of family, and we are delighted to have the opportunity to share their favorite holiday music and traditions with our viewers."
Series regulars Olivia Rodrigo, Joshua Bassett, Matt Cornett, Sofia Wylie, Larry Saperstein, Julia Lester, Dara Reneé, Frankie Rodriguez, Joe Serafini, Mark St. Cyr, and Kate Reinders will all appear in the special, which will also include Basset debuting an acoustic version of an original song he wrote for season 2. Additionally, the soundtrack for the special will be available on all streaming platforms on November 20.
An official release date for HSM: The Musical: The Series season 2 has not yet been announced, but Disney+ revealed back in February that the new season will see the theatre kids tackle a production of Beauty and the Beast, with Dancing with the Stars' Derek Hough in a recurring role of a rival school's drama teacher.
