AirPods Max Vs. Momentum 3 Wireless: Apple & Sennheiser Headphones Compared

Apple's AirPods Max include a number of features that signify the headphones' place within the premium category. Not to mention, many of them are perfectly designed for existing Apple device users, making them not only familiar, but also useful. However, Sennheiser's Momentum 3 headphones do come with enough features and tweaks to contend with the best of what Apple has to offer. Here's a look at how the two compare.

The latest AirPods entry borrows from the Apple Watch and AirPods Pro in terms of both aesthetics and technical details. Despite being the first headphones bearing the name of Apple's popular wireless earphone lineup, the AirPods Max are already well ahead of other AirPods products in stature and pricing. The AirPods Max literally costs as much as an iPhone, but do they really offer enough to warrant the steep price, especially after considering the stiff competition?

Based on the specs, AirPods Max come with a few notable features, including active noise cancelation (ANC), an adaptive EQ, and spatial audio, as well as Transparency mode and a nine-microphone setup. On the other hand, the Momentum 3's specs show that these headphones also come with ANC and Transparent Hearing, but lack a built-in equalizer and spatial audio. When it comes to hardware, the AirPods Max keep things simple and employ a digital crown for control while the Momentum 3 includes a three-button control design. Battery life is always an important area and the AirPods Max are rated to last up to 20 hours (even with the ANC and Transparency mode turned on), while Sennheiser's flagship headphones last up to 17 hours.

Apple's latest headphones certainly have an advantage when it comes to ease of use. The simplistic design, intuitive controls, and spatial audio experience that automatically adjusts, requires little effort from the user. While the AirPods Max seemingly have the upper hand, given the power management capabilities, there are still some key differences to consider other than the $550 price tag. Sure, the Momentum 3 doesn't have spatial audio, but they do allow users to tailor the sound, according to their personal preferences through the corresponding app. Those who want a more customized listening experience are likely to prefer playing with the Momentum 3's app, which offers a fully-adjustable equalizer, along with three levels of noise-cancelation to cater to different environments. Sennheiser's top-of-the-line headphones also come with built-in Tile-powered technology to help locate them when misplaced.

Of course, the Momentum 3 also offer the company's signature premium sound and for roughly $350, which is $200 less than Apple's latest headphones. Besides price, availability might also be something to consider, as while the Momentum 3 are readily available, AirPods Max options could ship much later. A last point to note is that AirPods Max require an Apple device running a minimum of iOS 14.3, so those with older devices might want to consider opting for Sennheiser's headphones, since the app supports iOS 13 (and up), as well as Android 8 and later.
