Christopher Nolan Loves the Fast and Furious Movies | Screen Rant

Christopher Nolan has revealed he has a surprising love for the Fast & Furious franchise, saying the movies got more fun as they got bigger. The British-American director is best known for his mind-blowing thrillers, including Inception and The Prestige and directing The Dark Knight trilogy. His most recent effort was Tenet, which managed to confuse both critics and audiences with its ambitious time-bending plot and reversed action. Originally expected to be one of the biggest hits of 2020, it may in fact go down in history as the movie that ended the cinema experience as we know it.

Nolan's films are a far cry from most action blockbusters, dealing as they do in cerebral plots and often featuring complex concepts like time inversion. On the other end of the spectrum are the Fast & Furious movies, which are fun, over-the-top action blockbusters which throw logic out of the window in service of entertainment. Starring Vin Diesel, John Cena and the rest of the traditional "Fast family", the latest entry in the franchise, Fast 9, is almost complete according to director Justin Lin. The movie will drop in 2021 after being delayed by a year due to the pandemic. And, surprisingly, it sounds like Nolan may be first in line to watch it when it comes out.

Talking to Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Nolan confirms the rumors that he's a fan of the franchise. He says he's more of an "original recipe" guy, referring to Rob Cohen's franchise starter, which itself was a remake of Point Break. He also singled out The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift as a great entry in the franchise, and mentioned director Justin Lin's skill in bringing the big action sequences to life in the more recent movies. He also speaks about how people complain about the sequels getting bigger, but acknowledges directors don't want to go smaller with sequels, so it's mostly their fault. You can read his full comments below:

I’m sort of an original recipe [guy], I mean the Rob Cohen original ... But I’ve got a very soft spot for Tokyo Drift actually. And then the skill as Justin Lin’s iterations, as they got crazier and bigger and crazier and bigger, they became something else, but something else kind of fun. The fun thing about those movies is even as they’ve gotten bigger and bigger and bigger, as sequels have to do, everyone always complains that sequels get bigger but we’re the people making sequels get bigger, we do want them bigger, you don’t want them smaller, it’s the Alien 3 lesson that Fincher learned. You can do it but it’s not going to make anybody happy, even though personally I love that film, a lot more than he does in fact.

Nolan's revelation is perhaps one of the more surprising pieces of news to emerge in the strange year that has been 2020. Given the director's reputation for tending towards more intellectual approaches to filmmaking, the assumption would be that he dislikes so-called "stupid" action franchises typified by the Fast movies. However, it's clear he still appreciates the craft and creativity which goes into putting the films on screen, particularly when it comes to the action sequences, which are largely unmatched in cinema.

Hopefully when Fast 9 is released the director is pleased by the new direction the franchise goes in, with the new movie confirmed to take the crew into space. Perhaps Nolan will even take some inspiration from the movie, and simplify the plot of his next movie. Given how confusing Tenet was to audiences who saw it, Nolan could learn from the Fast franchise's more direct approach to storytelling.
