Michelle Pfeiffer Keeps Batman Returns Catwoman Whip in Her Closet

Multi-Oscar-nominated actress Michelle Pfeiffer has revealed that she keeps the whip from her time as Catwoman in Batman Returns inside her closet. Pfeiffer as Selina Kyle was arguably one of the biggest talking points surrounding the 1992 Tim Burton sequel, with the actress doing for Catwoman what Jack Nicholson did for the Joker.

Though the character now retains its own place in cinematic history, Pfeiffer’s portrayal of Catwoman involved no small amount of sacrifice. The latex catsuit was one of 60 others, each of which carried a $1,000 price tag. They were custom fit to Pfeiffer and so tight that the actress had to be covered in talcum powder in order to ease the process of putting it on. Once in the suit, a 12-14 hour workday with only one permitted bathroom break was standard, making for a very uncomfortable shoot for Pfeiffer. Thankfully, the difficulties involved in bringing the character to life on the big screen didn’t mar Pfeiffer’s performance, which comes off as smooth and effortless - and at times downright frightening. Add in Catwoman’s proficiency with a whip and Batman Returns really does offer audiences something unique.

Even though it’s been 28 years since Batman Returns was in theaters and numerous Batman films have since kept the franchise as popular as ever, Pfeiffer has proven that Catwoman is still capable of surprising fans. During an interview with InStyle editor-in-chief, Laura Brown for her podcast Ladies First, Pfeiffer revealed that she keeps her Catwoman whip hanging in her closet before producing it and making a few attempts at cracking it. The footage is provided via Brown’s official Twitter account, and it’s well worth checking out:

Since her arrival in 1940, Catwoman has been a mysterious and alluring Batman nemesis. But it was Pfeiffer who truly gave the character life in Batman Returns. Given the push to see more diverse characters on the big screen, it’s surprising that Catwoman hasn’t had another solo film. The last effort at such an undertaking was in 2004, when Halle Berry portrayed Kyle. That film didn’t find a receptive audience and since then, Catwoman hasn’t had another chance at a standalone feature. This being said, Zoë Kravitz will be Kyle in the upcoming The Batman, and should the character prove a favorite, then a standalone film could always be possible.

Regardless of the fate of Catwoman in film, it’s hard to imagine anyone unseating Pfeiffer from her spot as the best adaptation of Kyle. The character seems to have gotten hold of Pfeiffer as well - if the whip in her closet is any indication. At any rate, while Batman Returns might not be everyone’s favourite Batman movie, Pfeiffer steals the show, making the film well worth a watch.
