The next Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC fighter is none other than Final Fantasy 7's Sephiroth, as revealed at The Game Awards 2020 during the award show's presentation. Nintendo of America's Twitter teased earlier today that a new Smash Ultimate DLC fighter would be unveiled at the event, which naturally brought out the many already existing theories about which character would be joining the roster this time back into the spotlight.
For most of the game's existence, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC fighters have been a popular topic of both discussion and speculation. The addition of Minecraft Steve to Smash Ultimate did a lot of work in convincing the game's community that a previous leak, thought disproven by additions prior to Steve, could be true after all. That leak also speculated that Ryu from Ninja Gaiden and Doom Slayer from Doom would be joining the roster, which meant that many fans were convinced it was one of those two fighters who would be joining the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC fighter lineup when The Game Awards 2020 rolled around later in the night.
As it turns out, the next Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC fighter was Sephiroth, a character that had never truly been rumored for the game before. During The Game Awards 2020 presentation, Nintendo pulled back the curtain on the newest addition to Smash Ultimate. The character immediately impressed, showing off quick swordplay and a meteor ability that appeared extremely powerful - and, of course, he was accompanied by his trademark theme song. It's the kind of addition that's sure to get people excited.
As always, the discussion surrounding the new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC fighter has already begun shifting from excitement over the new roster addition to how Sephiroth might fit into the title's gameplay system. Adding new characters isn't always easy, and while Smash Ultimate has managed to mostly avoid the pitfalls that saw Cloud and Bayonetta absolutely destroy Super Smash Bros. For Wii U/3DS, the threat of a similar game-changing introduction always looms large over such a deep, intricately designed title. It's funny that Sephiroth joins with that in mind, too.
That's for fans to worry about later on, however. For now, the reveal of Sephiroth as the new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC fighter during The Game Awards 2020 was a big moment, and cause for the Smash community to be excited about something. That latter point really can't be understated, as many Super Smash Bros. fans became well-acquainted with the series through Melee, which is currently in the latest stage of a long, troubled relationship between its fans and Nintendo. The announcement doesn't make the property's problems at large disappear, but Sephiroth joining the Smash Ultimate roster is at least something to enjoy for those who love the Super Smash Bros. franchise.
