Kim Kardashian is continuing her prison reform advocacy and has taken more extreme measures in her plight. The Keeping Up With the Kardashians star took to her social media platforms on Thursday to advocate against the execution of Brandon Bernard.
Since early this month, Kim has been educating her followers on Brandon's death row case. The crime he committed was during his teenage years in 1999 when he took part in a kidnapping and murder of two youth ministers. Now at 40 years old, he was scheduled to be executed on December 10 for the crime he was involved in at 18. “First, I want to say that a terrible crime was committed and me fighting for a stay of execution does not take away from the sympathy I have for the victims Todd and Stacie Bagley, and their families,” Kim wrote on Twitter over the weekend. “My heart breaks for everyone involved." In 2018, the KKW Beauty founder began her advocacy for the release of nonviolent drug offenders. Now, two years later, and the reality star is obtaining a law degree while passionately working toward criminal justice reform. She has been spending more time advocating for inmates on death row in recent months.
On Thursday, Kim took to Instagram and Twitter to beg her fans to contact President Trump in hopes of canceling Bernard's scheduled execution. "How can you help save Brandon’s life? You can tweet @realDonaldTrump and ask him to #SaveBrandonBernard," she tweeted along with a photo of Brandon during his childhood. She also posted a series of messages to her Instagram Story counting down the hours to his death. "Been crying all morning. Brandon Bernard will be executed in 6 hours," she wrote. After possibly receiving criticism over the victims affected by his crime, Kim addressed this in a later post. "Killing Brandson will not bring them back and I believe in my heart killing him isn't right," she wrote.
A few minutes before he was scheduled to be executed, Kim shared another message expressing her heartbreak. "Just spoke to Brandon for what will likely be the last time. Hardest call I've ever had," she shared. "We didn't say goodbye because we wanted to be hopeful that we would talk again, we said talk to you soon." She added the broken heart emoji to symbolize her sadness in the matter.
Brandon becomes one of the many inmates the SKIMS founder has advocated for in recent years. Her transition into advocacy has helped her be seen in a new light by communities who might've previously thought differently about her care for the less fortunate.
