Lando Calrissian, the beloved Star Wars scoundrel, will be getting his very own Disney+ series, Lando, from Justin Simeon. Simien’s past work includes the critically and popularly acclaimed film Dear White People, as well as the hit Netflix series of the same name. The show will be the latest and highest-profile outing for Lando to date, thrusting one of the franchise’s most popular side characters into the main character seat for the first time.
Introduced in the 1980s, The Empire Strikes Back as the conniving, double-crossing. Still, the well-intentioned governor of Cloud City, Lando Calrissian, quickly became a vital piece of the Star Wars universe. He returned in 1983’s Return of the Jedi and has recently seen a significant resurgence in the series, appearing in both The Rise of Skywalker (played as he was in the original trilogy by Billy Dee Williams) and Solo: A Star Wars Story (played by Donald Glover).
Now, Disney has announced that the Bespin-based gambler, conman, and space pilot will be getting his own series on Disney+. It’s unclear who will play the iconic role or when in the saga Lando will be set, but given the huge span of canonical time the character is active in the storyline, there are near-endless possibilities. Earlier this year, rumors circulated about a Lando series that would bring back Glover in the leading role. Given that the show is in fact in development, the casting speculation could be true as well. At this time, there is no definite release date planned.
The bigger question now is exactly what kind of content the series will cover. A few years ago, it would have made absolute sense to go for a young-Lando approach and bring Donald Glover back from Solo, but Williams’s recent return to the role he originated means an old-Lando approach could be in the works as well. Depending on the structure, there could even be room for two Landos in the same story, invoking flashback to cover multiple timelines as other series have done before.
Whatever the structure ends up being, the announcement is sure to excite longtime fans of the franchise. Lando’s escapades are the stuff of legend, even for other characters in the Star Wars universe, and the characters various adventures could fill countless seasons of a show. Simien’s role is exciting as well, as he’s proved himself an incredibly talented and innovative storyteller through his breakout work in the past several years. That all adds up to a lot of anticipation while fans await more news on Lando.
