Respawn has shared the official system and storage requirements for Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond, and they turned out to be fairly massive. It’s been roughly a year since the game was initially teased by Respawn back in September 2019.
The anticipated comeback of the old-school Medal of Honor series was marked by last year's official announcement of Above and Beyond. The game was said to be a reinvention of sorts as it took a completely different approach from other titles in the series. Above and Beyond was announced as a strictly virtual-reality experience, which allowed the development team to incorporate tons of impressive gameplay mechanics. For instance, players will be able to catch grenades mid-air and throw them back at enemies. At the same time, Above and Beyond is going back to the series’ roots setting-wise, as it returns to the WWII era.
As a VR experience, Above and Beyond requires quite a powerful PC to comfortably work. According to the official minimum system specs revealed by the developer on Steam, the title will need at least an Intel i7 9700K and Nvidia GTX 2080. On top of that, the game requires a huge chunk of free storage space just to be installed. The process of unpacking the game’s files will take at least 340 GB, but once installed, the title should occupy roughly 170 GB. Respawn promises that players won’t need to free that much of space for any of future updates to get unpacked. The least dramatic part of the system requirements is the necessity to have at least 16 GB RAM onboard, which is something common for modern video games, although it is stressed that it should be DDR4 type of RAM.
As an old-time competitor of Call of Duty, Medal of Honor won’t be interfering with Activision’s popular franchise by releasing Above and Beyond. The reason is plain simple - the latest Medal of Honor game won’t even launch on the platforms that Call of Duty games are currently available on. Respawn’s title is focused on delivering a pure VR experience for a completely separate audience of Oculus Rift owners.
Judging by the gameplay videos of Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond, the game is going to look gorgeous, which somewhat justifies massive requirements for gaming PCs. The same goes for storage space, as the title will probably utilize tons of high-quality textures for the in-game world to look believable. As the objects are put literally in front of a player’s eyes, they have to be sharp and realistic to avoid any possible cases of nausea caused by low graphics. Enjoying proper VR games on PC comes at a cost nowadays, which shouldn’t be surprising for players.
Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond releases on December 11 for Oculus Rift.
