The Future Batman Just Got Wonder Woman’s Approval

Spoilers for Batman Beyond #50 ahead!

The Batman of the future, Terry McGinnis, just got Wonder Woman’s seal of approval. In issue #50 of Batman Beyond, Terry saves the life of one of his greatest villains, earning Wonder Woman’s approval. The issue, the last in the current run, written by Dan Jurgens with art by Sean Chen, inks by Sean Parsons and colors by Chris Sotomayor, is in stores now.

Batman Beyond is set years in the future, a world in which Bruce Wayne has retired as Batman, but the criminals have not. Terry McGinnis assumes the mantle of Batman under Bruce’s mentorship. Recent issues of Batman Beyond have put Terry through his paces. He participated in a time-travelling adventure with Booster Gold that saw him meet his father in the past. And his mentor Bruce Wayne recently suffered a heart attack.

When the issue opens, someone has framed Terry for a series of thefts and murders; Bruce’s condition has worsened, and his body rejects the first attempt at a heart transplant. Meanwhile, a mysterious person is watching events from afar, and heads to Gotham City to investigate. Readers learn this individual is actually Wonder Woman, and she is going to attempt to help clear Terry’s name. Readers learn that the villainous Inque was behind the attacks, and that they were motivated by the fact Inque is dying and looking for a way to save herself. Rather than let her die, Terry opts to save her and look for a way to cure her—all of which goes a long way to impressing Wonder Woman. A second attempt at a transplant saves Bruce’s life, and when Terry quips that Bruce and Wonder Woman must have been quite a team in their day, Bruce reminds him that his day is not yet done.

Respect is a theme that runs through Batman Beyond #50. Throughout the issue, Wonder Woman refuses to believe that Terry is a murderer, and that Bruce would not take one under his wing. Her suspicions are proven correct, and Terry earns her trust. After the dust has settled, Terry and Bruce talk about Wonder Woman, and he mentions how much he respects her.

Throughout the duration of Batman Beyond, both the cartoon and the comic, Terry has proven himself worthy of the mantle of Batman time and again. He has Bruce’s respect and trust, and now he is earning it from the rest of the DC Universe. As mentioned earlier, this is the final issue of the series, and seeing it end with Wonder Woman’s acceptance of Terry provides readers with an emotionally satisfying conclusion.
