The movie Wonder Woman 1984 tackled setback after setback throughout the rollercoaster ride of a year that was 2020. Finally debuting on December 25th in all of its '80s-themed glory, there was one department of the much-awaited DCEU sequel that stood out above all the rest – costuming.
A superhero film set in 1984 promises fun and exciting fashion choices, and Lindy Hemming did not disappoint. Far from new to the world of blockbuster franchises, the brilliant designer helmed costume design for a number of major films, including The Dark Knight, Casino Royale, and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Not only is her work stunning, but it truly captures the character's personalities, especially when it comes to individual statement pieces.
10 Diana’s Cheetah Heels
Diana keeps it classy and business casual with her navy blue blouse and slacks that blend so seamlessly that it almost looks like a one piece suit.
Her cheetah print heels are a sassy and playful addition to the sleek, professional look. Not only is her choice of footwear cute, but they inspire Barbara Minerva's future aesthetic, foreshadowing her shocking physical transformation.
9 Steve’s “Pirate” Shirt
What else is there to do when one wakes up in a new body, other than to dig through a strange closet for an impromptu fashion show? Steve goes through a number of hilarious costume changes, but he is disgusted by none of them quite as much as he is the dreaded "pirate look".
The love of his life may have picked the loosely worn scarf and baggy white button down personally, but Steve is having absolutely none of it.
8 Barbara’s Workout Leotard
Few of Lindy Hemming's costume designs scream the chosen time period more than Barbara Minerva's gym attire. Eager to test out her new powers, Barbara lifts weights in a bright, turquoise leotard with a sewn-in bow slightly cinching around the waist.
It is delightfully reminiscent of those "as seen on TV" aerobics workout videos from the 1980s and 1990s.
7 Steve’s Jacket
Lucky for Steve, it only took one mini fashion show before he found an outfit that not only fit in with 1984 but fit Steve as a person as well.
An '80s aesthetic that would probably still work today, Steve dons a cuffed Members Only jacket, worn a little more than halfway unzipped. Underneath is a plain, white t-shirt to contrast the dark jacket and pants. It's a classy look, and it is absolutely his style.
6 Maxwell Lord’s Ties
A character that is often compared to Donald Trump, Maxwell Lord is a consistently failing businessman that also continually professes his success, regardless of the truth. Of course, he has to have the wardrobe to match his lies.
His business may be failing, but his pinstripe suits are on point, and always paired with a very dated patterned tie and matching pocket square combo.
5 Steve’s Animal Print Shirt
Skipping back to the epic fashion show that ensued earlier in the movie, Steve's first outfit choice was a doozy, but his risk-taking is admirable for a guy originally from the early 1900s.
A pair of slacks, an animal print shirt tucked in, and a blue blazer tops off his ensemble. Diana is less than impressed by the wild combination, but it has to be said that Chris Pine can rock a cheetah print.
4 Barbara’s Fur Coat
An excellent choice made by the costuming department is to show Barbara's internal transformation through the gradual evolution of her wardrobe.
As her confidence builds, her outfits become daring. While on the precipice of losing her humanity, Barbara wears thigh high boots, a cheetah print top, and a fabulous shaggy fur coat. Everything about her style choices brings predator to mind.
3 Diana’s Pinstripe Tops
Many of Diana's looks are brilliantly stylish yet understated, bringing attention to her natural beauty, and her humble character. Diana's business suit worn throughout some of the film is particularly very '80s chic.
Her clothing is layered with a white shirt with a rolled-up pinstripe sleeve, a pinstripe navy top over it, and completed with a jacket and a braided, brown belt worn comfortably at her waist.
2 Steve’s Fanny Packs
Steve's varied choices in fanny packs may very well rival Barbara's workout wear for the ultimate '80s look of the movie. Whether he is going for a subtle gray to match with his black zip-up jacket, or if he's feeling decidedly patriotic, his "host" has all of Steve's fanny pack needs covered.
Though the handy little accessories were an '80s staple, they have surprisingly come back into style in the past year.
1 Barbara’s Studded Snakeskin Jacket
Barbara's style and clothing choices get progressively edgier as she shifts closer to her final transformation from quirky geologist into comic book villainess.
One of her coolest costume pieces near the end of the film is a cropped, snakeskin patterned jacket with spiky studs along the collar and down the front. She completes her look with a black top and cheetah print skirt.
