Destined for life as Lucifer's vessel from birth, it's easy to remember how selfish Sam Winchester can be on Supernatural. He often makes decisions that favor him even though he claims good intentions. His brother Dean is often left struggling with the repercussions of his brother's choices.
But there are moments where Sam is genuinely selfless and acts out of a sense of benevolence for others. The times he takes the burdens on himself so that others won't have to remind the audience that he's a hero. Here are 10 of the most selfless things Sam has done on the show.
10 Removes Bystanders From a Demon Warehouse
When Sam and Bobby raid the Niveus Pharmaceuticals distribution warehouse, Sam finds innocent bystanders getting attacked by the Croatoan virus zombies. Without a second thought, Sam leaves Bobby the demon-killing knife and takes off to rescue the hostages.
With impressive skills and a soldier's ability, Sam saves nearly all the people stuck in the zombie-infested warehouse. It's this moment that reveals to Bobby that his plan to say, "Yes," to Lucifer will work or that he'll die trying. Sam makes many mistakes, but he always makes things right.
9 Lets Amy Go
As a teen, Sam befriended a kitsune named Amy. While his father and older brother hunted her mother, she revealed she never wanted to live this life as a monster. Sam helped her escape the Winchesters' hunt and the same fate as her mother.
Years later, as a grown woman with a son of her own, Amy reverts to her old monstrous ways. But it's not what it seems, as she needs fresh human parts to make her son healthy again. Once more, Sam lets her go.
8 Brings Gabriel Back to Sanity
Gabriel faked his death and used the lie to live away from his disastrous angelic family. But the demon Asmodeus found him out and kept him, prisoner, feeding off his grace to become more powerful. Arthur Ketch returned him to the bunker, but he was not the same Trickster they knew.
Left in a severe state of PTSD, Gabriel was unresponsive to most stimulation and refused his grace when Castiel tried to heal him. Sam talked to the angel about how his family needed him, like how Dean needed him, and he came back.
7 Tries Reaching Castiel Through the Leviathan Control
After the Leviathans take control of Castiel as he consumes the souls of Purgatory, he tears down the wall in Sam's mind keeping him from his memories of Hell. But Sam does not give up that easily on their friend. Dean believes Cass is gone, but Sam talks to Castiel through the possession.
Even after suffering a great deal of pain and torment from losing his mental block by Castiel's hand, Sam still believes in the angel. He calls Cass for help and the angel is able to answer for a brief moment.
6 Comforts Castiel When Dean Doesn't Trust Him
Cass and Dean's relationship has always been the greater focus between the angel and the Winchesters, but he and Sam have a great friendship as well. After their stint in Purgatory, Dean comes back with rougher edges than usual and doesn't trust Castiel, especially since no one knows how he got back.
It's fair, as prior to Purgatory, Castiel went to the dark side and played God. But Sam, always having faith, comforts Cass and tells the angel Dean needs more time to heal from his betrayal. He's a steadfast friend.
5 Left Law School to Find Dad
In the very first episode, Sam follows Dean to find John. When Dean says, "Dad's on a hunting trip, and he hasn't been home in a few days," Sam is all business. Even though he hasn't had contact with his family for years and it's the night before his grad school interview, Sam drops everything for family.
Their relationship may be strained, but Sam still loves his father and older brother. He doesn't want a part in the family business but he wants them to stay safe.
4 Gives Dean Christmas
Right before his crossroads deal is coming to a head, Dean gets nostalgic and wants to celebrate Christmas. Sam at first resists, as he doesn't want to think about celebrating a holiday that hasn't been great for them through the years. Especially as he watches his brother's last year on Earth slip away, it's too hard.
But Dean reminds him of what it means to him with the memory of Sam giving him the amulet when they were children. Sam relents and throws a Winchester Christmas party, even though it makes him sad.
3 Lets Castiel Extract Gadreel's Remaining Grace
After Gadreel heals Sam's body and holds it hostage for a time, some of his grace gets left behind. Castiel realizes it and wants to use the trace of grace to track Gadreel as they hunt him down. But the process of extraction is brutal and extremely painful.
Castiel doesn't want to do further damage to Sam's already fragile state of being, but Sam insists that he complete the process. He wants to make amends for his past and sees this as a way to do penance and good at the same time.
2 Jumped in the Pit
The iconic "Swan Song" episode saw Sam take over Lucifer's possession long enough to jump in the cage in Hell. Dean didn't want to let Sam go, but the younger Winchester insisted it was okay.
The audience watched in slow motion as Sam let go of Dean's jacket and fell backward into the pit to stop the devil from destroying the world. He made the ultimate sacrifice not only to save Dean but to save everyone. It's the kind of selfless act that's the true measure of a hero.
1 Took On the Tablet Trials
Originally, Dean wanted to take on the trials of the tablets, but when Sam saw the opportunity slipping away, he stepped in and completed the first task: killing a Hellhound. Each trial got harder and harder, but Sam didn't relent.
He believed completing the trials would close the gates of Hell forever, leaving the world free of demons. When Dean revealed that Sam would die in the process, his answer is, "So?" Sam was ready once more to lose his life to save the world from evil.
